DD weight/belly reassurance or kick me up the bum

DD is 4.4yo, she is 110cm tall and weighs 3 stone 4lbs (21kg I think). I'm worried that I am being one of those parents who can't see if their child is overweight or not and I don't know if it is true or if I am being neurotic.

She also has a big belly. It seems to increase over the day, but I thought she would be grown out of this by now?

She does like her food, but we try out best to go the everything in moderation route and she does 1 hour of martial arts and 1 hour of swimming every week, we try to walk whenever we can to places, I take her to the park or woods a couple of times a week and at nursery they have a huge garden with climbing things all over that I am know by the state of her that she hurls herself around that.

We go to a group with school age children and she roughly looks the same size as the girls who have just started Yr1.

I have been scared to post this, but honestly, should I be worried?

What size clothes does she wear?

gothicmama · 12/10/2010 21:20

speak to your health visitor if you are concerned

Bingtata · 12/10/2010 21:22

She wears 5-6 for the length. I would speak to health visitor, but they are rubbish here. She had toddler diarrohea and I gave up trying to get advice on that and potty training.

My twins are 5 and tall. One weighs 3 stone 8lb and the other 3 stone 4lb. They are not overweight at all and have flat stomachs.

If you are worried take her to your GP to get her weighed and measured.

antshouse · 12/10/2010 21:31

There is an on-line BMI calculator for children on wwww.keepkidshealthy.com. Put her age and measurements in and it will give you some idea.

crumpet · 12/10/2010 21:32

If the length of the 5-6 clothes is right then she may well be in proportion. I saw a 3 year old at a party who towered over my 4 year old, and she is in age 5 clothes - but she was perfectly in proportion and slim - just head and shoulders over the other children! I second taking her to the GP if you have concerns

Bingtata · 12/10/2010 21:38

Thank you for the further replies, that calculator says that she is overweight because she is 95th centile, so I guess I am doing something wrong here. Will book in with GP.

I think it is more about what she eats than what exercise she does

A quick tot up of calories would quickly see whether she is over eating

Bingtata · 12/10/2010 21:46

I think that you are right LadyBlaBlah because I can't really see that she could do anymore exercise, but now I'm thinking that I have just been blind and giving her too much to eat. I don't know what to do differently. Well I do, obviously, I need to not give her so much food, I don't know what to change.

Sorry I'm babbling.

it must depend what calculator you use as the nhs one says she is a healthy weight and is on the 73rd centile.

nhs bmi calculator

Seona1973 · 12/10/2010 22:12

I also used your figures in the bmi calculator given earlier and got her as 92nd percentile and 'at risk' of becoming overweight - BMI cant mean much if different sites have different calculations.

Bingtata · 12/10/2010 22:18

Thank you Seona, that is quite confusing. I think I just need to check with GP and get a definitive answer.
