best thing ever! ds now sleeps, his behaviour is amazing, his ability to function in the normal world is greatly improved. I can now sleep in one block without getting up in the middle of the night to do stuff.

We know someone who wasnt helped by the melatonin. He, however, had issues with his sleep which means that on re-examination he shouldnt had been given it as it wouldnt have been expected to work. iyswim.

However, i am still hugely greatful to the mnners who advised that i ask the gp to consider this as treatment for ds. Best thing in the world and made a huge difference to my, his and our neighbour's lives.

Ah maybe i should say that prior to melatonin, i had a psychopath who i feared and who couldnt socialise but also slept only a couple hours at night, often split up into small chunks and reguarly demanded some sort of stimulus. It was not unusual prior to the meds to find me teaching him to read at 2am / dicussing how things worked/playing board games. Just so that he didnt scream the house down and the neighbours could sleep. He didnt seem to need the sleep. I on the otherhand did and my health suffered very badly. Am still trying to sort out my sleep pattern and health but he is doing amazingly well and is snoring as we speak.

it is so nice to not have the 3 hours bedtime battles of old.

It is fucking fantastic.

Ds1 now sleeps. he goes to bed, and he lies down, and he reads his book for about 20 minutes, and then he goes to sleep.

he used to be twitching, wandering around and fiddling until at least 10 pm, sometimes midnight, and was too tired to function in the day - but now he is a much happier boy.

Melatonin says "Bedtime" to the body. You know how if you're really tired in the middle of the day, but you're stuck in a supermarket and it's not bedtime and you have a list of things to do a mile long? Ds1 felt like this at 9pm. now he knows it's time to actually relax and let his natural tiredness overtake him.

Fantastic stuff :)
Ds settles so much better on this particually in the summer when he finds it really difficult to sleep.
Can the GP prescribe ? We have always got it from his peadiatrition.

PumpkinBrain · 12/10/2010 01:59

equator: we get it from ds' peadiatrition but the initial request for consideration of the melatonin was done to the GP who contacted his pead. All repeat prescriptions have to be made through the bitch his secutary.
