Broken tooth - has yours had one?

Dd broke tooth at school today after falling over in playground Sad. All I could see when I went to collect her was a stump of a tooth. Took her to dentist who has glued the broken bit on but I'm not optimistic that it will hold.

Has any of yours had a broken (as opposed to chipped tooth) and what has happened?

Maggie, DH did this when he was 13. They filed the stump to a point so they could attach a crown and 30 years later he still has the same crown and never has any trouble with it ? he can eat apples and toffee with the best of them Grin

If there?s not enough of the tooth left to do this, it can be a bit more of a problem. Then the usual solutions are an implant (very expensive) or some sort of plate with a false tooth attached, but from what you?ve said it sounds like the dentist might be able to fix a crown.

That's encouraging. Touch wood, it's been all of 8 hours since he attached the broken bit and it's still on.

We'll see in a fortnight if the nerve has died and take things from there but she's in good spirits although she has many questions. These include 'will this glued on tooth have to last me for the rest of my life?' She's only 7 Smile

DS broke both his permament front teeth at primamry school. He has filling to make up the lost bits (one is about half the tooth!) and they work fine. Occassionally snap off, but dentist puts them straight back on. He could get crowns, but best to wait until fully grown, no more school rugby etc.

You mean BOTH front teeth? I should be grateful that it is just her one front tooth (half broken) and there is a bit of a chip on the other front one.

Good to know that if it snaps off they'll put something back on.

Did your ds have any problems with the nerve? Dentist says that it might die but they will check in 2 weeks time. If it does they need to remove it Shock

I did this when I was five on a shopping trolley, broke one of my front teeth and chipped another front one. the dentist left the chipped one and attached a crown to the broken one which has lasted 23yrs so far no problems and I have an appointment to have a crown fitted to the chipped one soon as it has worn down a little over the years. This I hate and is also a little sensitive. I am sure your DC will be fine, its more common than your think

My DD fell off her bike on the way home from school when she was about 12 and smashed off about half of one of her front teeth. The dentist remodelled the missing half with a white filling and even asked to see a photo of her before to get the best match, they even matched the colour! DD is 18 now, we have never had any problem with it and the first filling is still going strong. I expect she will have a crown when she is older.

All very heartening, thank you.

dd lost a good third of a front tooth while larking about in the playground age 12. Never found the bit, so the dentist did as evenstar's dentist did and refashioned the tooth with filling material. The first one fell off after about a year, but the second is still going strong at age 15. You can't tell it's false looking at it though.

DS had not had any nerve problems. It WAS a bit painful the first time they sorted everything, as the nerve was so close, but since then everything has been fine.

His orthodontist was also fab and allowed extra time for appts as did not want the train tracks to break his teeth (which were wonky as he knocked a front tooth out aged 4!) and had to be very careful removing them all. He also has a permanent retainer behind his teeth as may damage them by continually taking a retainer in & out. This is better as you cannot see it & he cannot forget to wear it! Grin

Milli, I'm pretty sure that dd will need orthodontic treatment and was thinking that the break would exclude her from having braces. Good to know that she may still be able to have braces to sort out her overcrowding.
