dd1 has had a high temp and bad cough since friday, i have been giving her nurofen but have just read on the back do not give for more than 3 days in a row. So does that mean she cant have any today?

I think you are supposed to seek medical help if you still need to give it after 3 days in a row. An hcp can give the go ahead to continue using it ime but they need to check out why it's being used in the first place in case it's an infection for example.

a high temp persiting for more than 3 days needs checking out as there may be an infection which needs treating. it is fine to give meds longer than 3 days though if a child needs it

so i wont be wasting the docs time if i take her?

Her cough is getting worse and it's chesty but she isnt wheezing. she feels hot but i have lost my good thermometer and my crappy one says 37.8

She had friday off school and today, if she has no temp can she go to school with a cough? that might sound thick but shes only just started in reception so i have no idea if i should be keeping her off??

I don't know about the school issue. 37.8 is a very mild temp. Is that with meds?

How is she? Just a cough? Otherwise well?

What has her temp been like? NHS Direct are v good if you are in this country.

sneezecake · 11/10/2010 17:20

if you are checking temp under the arm, add .5 a degree.

and if she is getting worse not better I'd get her checked by the Dr she may be developing a chest infection and needing anti-biotics

38 is a mild fever. Anything up to that can be just a normal fluctuation. I wouldn't count on your thermometer if you think it is dodgy though! Worth getting checked out in case there is anything underlying and I wouldn't send her into school until you know what is causing the cough - just in case! :)
