Story books about operations

DS is 3 and a half and is having a umbilical hernia operation in 2 weeks. Only a day case, no over night stay, but obviously he has never been to a hopsital and I wondered if anybody could advise any books that cover this topic.
I did try to explain what might happen, but going by the look of horror that appeared on his face, I obviously wasn't explaining it very well!
Many thanks :)

I trained as a paeds nurse a few years ago so I know that there's not alot (if any) of these. The hospital I trained in would bring the children who were having an operation in the week before for a pre-op assessment, they would watch a video with the children to show them what was going to happen.

I would speak to the children before their operations to make sure that they understood.
As he's 3 I'd go with:

You're not supposto eat before he goes to the hospital so he'll be hungry. The nurse would put a special cream on your hands and some sticky plastic over the top. When it was time for you to go to the special room with mummy and a lady/man that likes to read books. There will be a few other people in the room, they all look a bit silly as they are all wearing the same clothes. Mummy will be there to give you a cuddle and the lady or man with the book will show you some really funny pictures. You'll feel a bit tired so will close your eyes. When you are awake you will be back in your bed where all of the other children are and the nurses will give you some medicine, they will all be very kind. When you have had something to eat and something to drink then you can go home.

Will this do?

The only books I could find where if you'd hurt yourself and had to go hospital, but this is brilliant, thank you!

Sorry about the grammar in this, you get the idea though.
I write childrens books now and this is on my list of things to do.

I hope all goes well. They should have a play specialist there who will sit and play, they will come with you both to the anaesthetic room. The staff really do look after the children so he's in very safe hands. You really don't have to go into the anaesthetic room if you don't want to. Alot of parents find it upsetting and to be honest, it upsets the children if they are too upset so it's better that a nurse goes in instead. I've been a surrogate parent more then a few times, the nurses really don't mind. Please don't feel as if you have to go with him.

Thank you!
I thought I'd be ok and actually hadn't really thought about it, but now the date has come through, I thought I'd best try and prepare him. He's very aware and understands so much and actually if he knows whats going to happen (hence the need for the book), I don't think he'll bat an eyelid at all that is happening and will take it all in his stride.
I am actually more worried about telling him he can't have breakfast on the day then anything else lol!!!!
Massive thanks again :)

I had some ops when I was little, and I definitely had a book about going into hospital. It was part of a series about a pair of boy/ girl twins, perhaps Topsy and Tim? This was 25+ years ago, so perhaps out of print, but still...

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 09/10/2010 17:52

Tim has an accident though Medee, he doesn't have an operation.

as I say, it's been a while, they may have changed it. I remember it being reassuring, and mentions a lot of what you outline. Anyway, just trying to be helpful.
