DS sleeping a LOT, GP?

IMoveTheStars · 07/10/2010 10:16

DS has started sleeping much more than normal in the last few weeks. He would normally get up before 7am but recently it's been 9am or later (he slept til 11am the other day) He's very tired all the time and has started sleeping in the car again.

I thought it might have just been a growth spurt but he's not eating any more than usual (despite being offered it) and I'm worried about him.

Thinking of taking him to the GP but worried I'm being OTT. (I would go to the HV if she wasn't so bloody useless)

bump?

I'd be worried too. No idea what it could be. TBH I'd definitely go to the GP, just to be on the safe side.

How old is DS?

ladybirdladybirdflyawayhome · 07/10/2010 11:31

How old is your son Jar?
You could give nhsd a call & speak to a qualified nurse 08454647.

They might suggest a trip to the doctors or a blood test.

hth

He's nearly 3.

He's generally fine in the morning, but doesn't seem to have as much energy as usual and is acting up a lot more too (which could be down to being almost three, but it's out of character for him)

My DD is the same age, I'd be worried too if she started doing this. Just call the GP for an appointment, you'll keep on worrying until you have.

IMoveTheStars · 07/10/2010 11:59

Thanks, I will. Its possible he's anaemic as his diet isn't brilliant.

OP posts:
oricella · 07/10/2010 12:16

Yes - get checked for aneamia. Also, a very long shot, but my DD was like this a few months back... she tested positive for Lyme disease, but we knew she'd had ticks feeding off her earlier ... if you're outdoorsy people in a high risk area that could be worth considering too

IMoveTheStars · 07/10/2010 12:22

Never noticed any ticks on him, but thanks for that - I'll bear in mind.

erk.. he's being sent for tests for coeliac, leukaemia, anaemia, diabetes :(

bloody glad I took him, thanks for the advice.

MmeBodyInTheBasement · 11/10/2010 13:02

Oh, how worrying, Jared. Glad you took him to the doc, hope that it is nothing serious.

IMoveTheStars · 12/10/2010 14:35

Gah, starting to get really worried now. He slept 15 hours last night and is now having a nap. He hasn't had a nap in the day for months.

:(

OP posts:
sharbie · 12/10/2010 14:37

best of luck with the tests

IMoveTheStars · 12/10/2010 14:41

thanks. I know it's probably nothing but I'm convincing myself that it's something awful :(

OP posts:
sharbie · 12/10/2010 14:44

how long before tests come back?
maybe viral mine always sleep non stop when they get a virus.

IMoveTheStars · 12/10/2010 14:49

it's been going on for a month or so :(

tests prob won't be back until Monday.

RunningOutOfIdeas · 12/10/2010 15:01

Good that you took him to the gp. Hope it is nothing too serious. However everything that you have listed is treatable, so try not to worry.

Booner · 12/10/2010 16:23

Glad you took him to the GP, I was going to suggest testing for coeliac disease (my two boys have it) and anaemia.
Hope the results don't take too long.

IMoveTheStars · 12/10/2010 17:26

Booner - hope you don't mind me asking, what is the test for coeliac disease? They're just doing a blood test at the moment but I've read they're not too accurate?

OP posts:
Booner · 12/10/2010 19:09

Feel free to ask anything.

Does he have any other symptoms?

The blood tests are sometimes not very accurate in under 5s but were in our case. They then do a gut biopsy only if you agree to it(I think under general anaesthetic).

My son's blood test when he was just over 3 was very positive (reading of 250)for coeliac disease.

As my niece was already diagnosed with it we were not made to have the gut biopsy so I'm not sure about the accuracy of that.

My older son was tested beacuse he seemed a bit under the weather and was positive for coeliac disease (reading of 40) though he didn't have any majorly obvious symtoms.

You can end up anaemic if you develop coeliac disease but are still having gluten in your diet.

When you are bing tested yu have to continue eating gluten until all tests are complete.

If you've got any other questions please ask.

I'm pleased your doctor is running plenty of tests though waiting for test results is horrible - I feel for you.

IMoveTheStars · 12/10/2010 19:14

Thanks Bonner.

He actually doesn't have much gluten, and thinking about it now the possibility of coeliac disease should have dawned on me before this. He can't eat weetabix or whole grain bread as it results in horrible diarrhoea (so we've cut those out of his diet) the only wheat he really has is a couple of slices of white bread a day, most cereal-related things he eats are oat based.

I'm not sure what other symptoms to look out for?

OP posts:
Booner · 12/10/2010 20:15

I'll list my sons symptoms

Pale face
Dark circles under eyes
Acrid smelling runny/foamy stools and wind
Bloated stomach though skinny arms and legs, flat buttocks
Wants carrying a lot
Says legs/tummy hurt
Prone to have meltdowns
Wants carrying upstairs to bath/bed
Poor appetite
Not keen to try new foods
Fairly constant cold/runny nose
Not very keen on socalising when previously quite outgoing.

All of these have gone since going gluten free (apart from the occasional, to be expected meltdown!)

IMoveTheStars · 12/10/2010 20:25

Thanks very much for that, very helpful. He has terrible nappies but only when he's had weetabix/shreddies/whole grain bread and recently he's had awful wind.

Aside from the runny nose he has every single symptom on your list.

OP posts:
Booner · 12/10/2010 20:47

I didn't notice some of these symptoms when my youngest was poorly it's only since he's been better that we realised they were symptoms.

He is a completely different child now. Full of life, energy and very sociable and races me upstairs to the bath!

I was relieved to have a definite diagnosis.

If it happens to be Coeliac Disease you will see an improvement within days of going gluten free (it takes a longer to fully recover) so if you can keep giving him gluten till all tests are done it is really worthwhile.

Hope you get some answers soon, keep us updated.

IMoveTheStars · 12/10/2010 21:21

Thanks so much, you've been really helpful :)
