For no apparent reason, he looks like he has been boxing but he hasn't bashed himself, eaten anything, drank anything! I can't understand why this has happened. He is off school with a high temp but can't really see how the 2 can be related.

Phone NHS direct or go directly to your GP now. It could be something serious.

Dont know the back ground, but if mouth has swollen up then I think you should seek medical advice urgently.
Either GP, or NHS Direct 0845 4647, or if his breathing is affected then 999

I have already been to my GP - went when it first happened this morning, his mouth was swelling in front of us and the receptionist tried to give me an appointment for 12.50 Hmm

Anyway after a while another receptionist decided maybe he could be seen by the nurse. We have given him piriton but although it's no worse it's still swollen. Sad

What did the nurse say had caused it? And has it swollen more since then and the piriton?

LauraNorder · 06/10/2010 13:13

She had no idea, said we probably wouldn't find the cause, Dr refused to come in but said to come back if it got worse, which it hasn't, but it hasn't got any better either.

Go to the hospital, his airway could swell next.

It could be anaphylaxis.

Very serious.

LauraNorder · 06/10/2010 13:21

I think it's unlikely to be an anaphylatic reaction, it would have happened by now, his breathing isn't compromised at all, he just has a swollen mouth (swelling started a while ago now) but I can't work out why!

Seems odd that the Dr wouldn't come in and see your son.

I think that if it was me, and I was happy that his condition was not deteriorating, then I would push for a GP appt this afternoon and get a second opinion.

Have found out what it is - it's angioedema secondary to his viral infection! It's gone down a lot now but is still a little bit swollen. Poor little man Sad

Hope he's feeling better today.

LauraNorder · 07/10/2010 17:40

Yes he's better today. The swelling has disappeared completely and he has been back to normal for nearly the whole day. Just as I was thinking he could go back to school tomorrow he spiked another temp so it's still lurking.
