Is this odd or am I being neurotic?

My dd (almost 6) has an awful cold and her sleep has been really disrupted by it. Last night she came into my room crying saying she could hear a loud noise that was keeping her awake. There was no loud noise. She described it as being like a train on the tracks. I sat with her while she went to sleep but she kept waking up in abject terror saying she couls hear the noise again.

She had a similar experience a few months ago when she said she could hear a bang on the wall and someone shouting.

I am freaking out that she has got the start of a mental health problem and is having hallucinations. Am I being neurotic or should I be worried.

She said the noise was gone this morning and is generally a happy child. Help.

could be just the cold. see what she is like when the cold has gone. keep a dairy so if you need to go to the doctor you have reminders!

The sound that a train makes, could be coming from within her ears.

If she has a very bad cold and is congested, it would not be unusual.

The banging could be someone banging or a dream, I am assuming this was during sleep. There is probably no need to worry at all.

If these things only happen during sleep then they are not that unusual as DCs often have very vivid dreams.

If it occurs again go to the Dr and get her checked, even if it is only to give your self peace of mind.

I used to hear my heartbeat loudly when I had ear infections, whenever I was lying on the pillow. Yes it would sound like a train on the tracks - a 'drumming' sound with a 'rushing' sound in the background.

Those are all very helpful. My dear friend has just put it into prespective by telling me that when she was young she was convinced a monkey was outside her bedroom window. She still remembers it vividly!! I feel so much better. I realise childrens imaginations run riot, especially at night and when ill.
I am sleep deprived, thats all I can balme for the neurosis!
Thanks all Smile

The train noise could easily be the rushing sound your ears make when you are really bunged up with catarrh, like System says.

I used to thing there was a snake under my bed. I'd check every morning. There never was Grin

I second what Pixie said. DS is 8 and sometimes wakes up sweaty and terrified and it can take a few minutes of being awake for him to realise that he's not 'in danger'. It always happens when he wraps himself (his head as well) in the duvet.

If it only happens while sleeping I wouldn't worry.

Sounds very much like the fluid in her ears and sinuses are thickened and snotty causing that awful rushing crackling noise - add a bit of sleepy childs imagination and it sounds like your DD train noises! A good cuddle will do the trick as Im sure you know.

ConnorTraceptive · 06/10/2010 23:23

Sounds like an ear thing.

Also ds often has night terrors and the other night told me he was being chased by dinosaurs!

Sometimes myself when I am particularly tired or run down I find that as I'm in that drifty off stage I get a sudden and unexplained sense of anxiety and panick. Don't know why but it can feel quite disturbing.

colditz · 06/10/2010 23:26

it's catarr in her ear, not a mental health problem. Give her some Sudafed.

boolifooli · 06/10/2010 23:46

connortraceptive - I get that! a wave of doom and gnawing awareness of my utter futility. It passes quickly but is really unsettling. As weird as that sudden jolt thing you get just as you enter deep sleep.

To the OP, could be tinnitus which is common after a cold. had it for weeks once, very annoying and you usually notice it at night most as there are no other noises to drown it out.. As you say she is otherwise motoring along as normal so is very likely to be an ear thing.

ConnorTraceptive · 07/10/2010 00:08

Glad I'm not the only one Boolifooli! I really have a sense "Oh god I'm going to die tonight!" it's horrible!

systemsaddict · 07/10/2010 11:09

Ah yes, dinosaurs, I have to ceremonially throw the dinosaurs out of dd's window every evening and any time she wakes in the night atm, pesky things keep sneaking their way back in ... Grin

missmoopy · 07/10/2010 17:06

Thanks ladies. We've had no more odd noises and she is much improved snotwise!! I am a neurtoic idiot Blush
