Migraine at age 4?

My ds woke up in tears last night saying his head hurt, I gave him some calpol but he woke again 45 minutes later and was really inconsolable. Sad

I could feel a throbbing on the side of his head in exactly the place where I get throbbing one-sided pain when I have a migraine. All I can do is lie on the affected side in a darkened room and try to sleep, usually that helps. He went back to sleep eventually in my bed after some more calpol but was very unsettled in the night.

The pain had gone this morning and he has gone off to playgroup happily enough but he was really upset last night.

Can children get migraines? Would nurofen be better than calpol to give him as it is anti-inflammatory?

He has never had this before and I hope it isn't a sign of things to come. My mother and grandmother both suffered as well as me.

Anyone got any advice/tips?

DD1 got headaches like that usually the high fever follows before 12h-24h. First sign of tonsillitis, flu or bad colds...
Keep checking him and make him rest.

I don't give DD painkillers when her head hurts as I want to see if there is a fever coming... Bedrest and water.
Calpol and nurofen makes them hyper, difficult then to know what are real symptoms.
But then she complain about something all the time, only the dazed feverish look tells me there is something wrong and then I can give her some medecine.

I can't remember a time when I didn't get migraines.

As others have said it could be the start of him coming down with something so I suspect it may be a case of "wait and see" but it's deffo possible for him to have migraines this young because I did.

I don't want to worry you, but I would also check out with a GP.

Thank you all.

He has a gunky ear today, and a cold coming, so maybe that was it. He is asleep now though - very early for him, but we were up a lot in the night. I had (almost) forgotten that daze feeling of only a few hours sleep......
