think that DD 20mo has hand foot and mouth - has white sores on her tongue. She's had a cold on and off since starting nursery 2 mornings a week at the end of August :( she is drooling like a mad thing - any idea when this might let up? she must be sick, cried trying to eat her favourite - jaffa cake - this morning

Does she have any white blisters onm her hands and feet? You don't have to hget them in all three places, but she probably has one or two if it is h,f and mouth. It only lasts a few days to a week, so when did she start with the white sores?

drivingmisscrazy · 04/10/2010 13:53

noticed them first on Saturday (I think) she was trying to eat and pushing her food out with her tongue. She has a couple of little spots on her hand. She is utterly wretched, poor little girl. Even avocado is too sore for her to eat - so she's hungry too :(

DD2 had a mouth full of ulcers back in spring and couldn't even swallow her own saliva. Doc told us to give her calpol about an hour before food and that worked. Good luck, poor thing, it's horrible Sad

drivingmisscrazy · 04/10/2010 14:07

schulte - how long did they last?

I have it at the moment after catching it from dd and I mainly have them on my feet and mouth and my mouth is soooo sore. My dd seemed ok with it though but drooled uncontrollably for a few days. Your poor dd, I am finding some food are a lot worse than others, sweets, anything tangy (had roast lamb yest and the mint sauce was agony!) is not good. Keep the food plain and soft. Hope she's better soon.

drivingmisscrazy · 04/10/2010 21:09

thanks - she's an absolute disaster, possibly because she is also hungry! She has a rash on her back, and a slight fever, but these do seem consistent with h, f and m - but going to doc in morning just in case...(PFB and I don't care!) Her mostly decent diet totally junked (literally) in favour of things she can eat (creamed rice pudding, ice cream, bananas, might make her a homemade smoothie with yogurt in tomorrow or just buy her a YOP

poor sweetheart :(

It shouldn't last longer than a few days hopefully - dd2's wasn't foot and mouth but caused by the cold sore virus. Don't worry about her diet, just get through these few days as best you can. And do try the calpol. Good luck!

drivingmisscrazy · 04/10/2010 21:23

from the perspective of today a 'few' days sounds like a lot! - but she's asleep now so hopefully she'll feel better tomorrow

So by a few I meant 3, perhaps? And you should see an improvement. But as I said my dd2's virus was a different one so don't want to compare really. Fingers crossed!

drivingmisscrazy · 04/10/2010 21:30

thanks schulte - the things they get that you'd never ever heard of, eh?

DS had it for a week but the first three days were the worst bit.

drivingmisscrazy · 04/10/2010 21:40

whomovedmychocolate - thanks and did he bounce back fairly fast then?

Oh god yes, ate about six times as much as normal a week later and was running around on day seven licking his sister (who then caught it too!)

drivingmisscrazy · 04/10/2010 21:50

Small child with a mouthful of ulcers here too, though it's from tonsillitis not hfm, it's miserable for them. Keep her dosed up with painkillers - we're using paracetamol and ibuprofen - dd won't take them from a spoon because it's too sore but will knock them back from a shot glass (sophisticated 2-year-old!) and then quickly sucks water through a straw to rinse the meds off her mouth. Or dose with a syringe to avoid the sore spots. Ice lollies may or may not help too. I think they get over it quicker than we do, it's awful seeing them in pain!!

drivingmisscrazy · 04/10/2010 22:08

oh dear systemsaddict - that's why we're going to doc to rule out tonsilitis. She will take calpol from little cup, but won't touch the Nurofen - I think the calpol is sugar free, and sugar probably stings. We have a syringe though. Am going to make ice lollies tomorrow :)

How's she doing today misscrazy?

drivingmisscrazy · 05/10/2010 15:38

she seems a lot better - thanks so much for remembering! Her mouth is still sore and she is a bit 'viral' (mostly fine, but suddenly just runs out of steam). She is currently taking all of her nappies off the changing table and 'rearranging' them. Doc ruled out tonsilitis, and thinks it's some kind of herpes virus :(

She slept the sleep of the just I am glad to say

Oh good, mine's doing better too. Isn't it nice when they start to sleep again!! Grin
