Infant with bad diarrhea

Hi, my 10mo ds has acute diarrhea as of yesterday. He has been sick on and off over the past 4 weeks with colds and a virus and yesterday started with his explosions. He has movements about every half hour or so and the stools are very watery, curdled and quite yellow. He already has 8 teeth and hasn't had this before so I don't think it's teething. I've read that if it doesn't settle in 24 hours to take them to the docs but I'm wondering if any experienced mums can give me some ideas or suggestions? He's on formula and solids but I'm now limiting his solids to rice, dry toat, rice cakes, apple & banana. He is drinking a decent amount of water but mainly with his solids. Is the formula going to make it worse due to the milk content? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't limit his solids at all, get in everything that you can. Egg is good at binding them up, so would he eat scrambled egg yet? Keep the fluid intake up as the biggest worry will be dehydration. I have been given advice to limit dairy/milk when they get like this, but I have never done it as my kids all only ever drink milk, and he will need the calories and the fluid. Hope that helps, someone will be along soon with more ideas.

He loves egg so he'll be happy to eat some. I fed him some warm weetbix since reading your advice and he gobbled it down and went to sleep without too much trouble so he obviously has been missing his solids. I tried to feed him rice last night but he wasn't interested so maybe I'll give him some egg rice tonight which he always enjoys. He's drank about 150ml of water so far this morning so I'll keep offering him water throughout the day. Thanks for your suggestions. :)

My DS had something similar. I kept feeding him as normal, provided he wants it, as had read that the BRAT diet is too limiting in calories.

I also gave calpol as he had a raised temp.

I didn't need to take him to the docs in the end - it did last about a week but he was fine in himself just a bit clingy. If you notice your DS seems not right, take him to the docs for a check over.

Good luck Smile

Thanks for that! I was concerned with the weightloss on the BRAT diet so I'm going to keep feeding him as normal then (within reason, obviously won't give him citrus fruit and the like) and will give him some caprol too as he also has a raised temp. I gave him camillia last night but it didn't seem to help him that much. DS is clingy so just a day at home with lots of cuddles and his fav. dvds. Thanks heaps, I have some peace of mind now.

I gave my DD an infant probiotic when she had a bad bout of diarrhoea, It was a powder which I sprinkled into her formula and she was on the mend the following day.
I was also advised to switch her formula to a goats milk formula as apparently its much gentler on their digestion.
(Apparently our digestive system is more similar to a goats than a cow's) That seemed to help too.
Hope your DS is on the mend soon.
