Does o your child suffer from viral induced wheeze? How is it treated?

DS1 is nearly 4 and has suffered viral induced wheezy attacks since he turned 1. He's had allergy testing with no problems highlighted and is absolutley fine between attacks so iot has been diagnosed as VIW, which I agree with.

After many courses of prednisolone between the ages of 1 and 2, and a couple of hospital admissions and then various attempts at Beclametazone, and Seravent he finally got prescribed Seratide and Montelukast when he turned 3.

It has worked brilliantly and we had our best winter ever last year. He still coughs a lot when he gets a cold but no wheeze, so it's much more manageable.

We had an appt with the paed in the spring when I was told that seeing as his allergy tests came back clear, and he is absolutely fine between attacks, then he doesn;t have asthma and hterefore it was inappropriate for him to continue with his meds.

I was very concerned about this and said so but agreed to see what he was like without them.

He was back in hospital within a month, wheezing again, but they were reluctant to put him back on the meds, even though they worked so well. I pushed really hard to get them and he's now back in it and he's been fine ever since.

DS2 is now going the same way and has had 3 admissions since May. I'm now starting the fight to get decent preventors for him.

Anyone else had this problem when treating VIW?

I understand the theory that they don't want to pump steroids into a child that is prefectly well 90% of the time, but there seems no other practical or effective option, excpet endless courses of pred.

DS2 always got a viral wheeze after a cold or cough. gave him salbutaol inalers which helped. Now i have had to put covers on beds and pillows as it has triggered off a sensitivity to dust mites.

My ds had the brown inhaler - Beclametazone I think which he used every day even when not wheezy. He used the blue as well when he was wheezy. This worked really well over a couple of years. Eventally reduced brown inhaler to one puff over a period of time. GP explained that the amount of steroids he was getting was tiny. It certainly hasn't affected his growth either.

Thanks everyone.

I'll check out that info about Montelukast Pixie. I certainly dont't want to give him drugs that he doesn't need, but on the same token I don't want him in and out if hospital.

I haven't heard anything about steroid intake affecting thier bones either - more homework for me!

Thanks again, it's food for thought Smile

Thanks for that. He's had many courses of pred, but never for more than 5 days at a time.
