blood in toilet and bottom (graphic)

Dd1 age 6 has just had a poo. There was a lot of blood in the toilet (in the bowl and splattered around sides)and lots on her bottom. She said she had a tummyache before she had a poo and that it wasn't a "hard" or difficult poo. There are no sores/cuts to see or anything that looks wrong. Apart from that she seems well, tummyache gone.
Occasionly in the past I've noticed a tiny spot of blood on her hanky when wiping her bottom - but nothing that looks anywhere near this much.
Is this from a haemmaroid (sp) torn vein sort of thing and nothing to worry about or should I make an appointment to talk to GP?
I'm concerned - there was rather too much blood for my liking.
(worried)

Go and speak to the GP. It could well be nothing but you might as well find out for sure.

AnyFucker · 29/09/2010 20:39

make an appt with your GP tomorrow

kissingfrogs · 29/09/2010 20:41

I think you're right. Even though she seems fine you just never know and I'd never forgive myself if it was a sign of something wrong and I ignored it. Thanks.

Was it bright red or dark red? Bright is better and less of a worry because it's probably something like you've suggested iirc, but either way you need to see the gp.

AnyFucker · 29/09/2010 20:42

will you come back and let us know what the gp says, please ?

kissingfrogs · 29/09/2010 20:46

It was bright red.
I'll make an app 1st thing. If she was feeling unwell atall I'd be on my way to A&E with this.
Will post tomorrow to let you know what GP says.
Thanks for replies xx

Update:
Gp said difficult to diagnose from the 1 incident, but asked if dd had recently been on any farms or eaten any pre-cooked chicken (eg restaurant). Yes to both. She said there was (unpronouncable name) going around characterised by diarrhea and blood loss (but dd no diarrhea)and could be quite serious.
Took dd to hospital for blood tests - though these were also because dd is on antiepileptic medicine and therefore also to make sure that the blood loss was not due to side-effects (liver/kidneys etc).
Should have results tomorrow.
Am off to google the (unpronouncable name) now...

Was it campylobacter?

Glad GP isn't too alarmed, and hope it doesn't happen again!

ellenjames · 30/09/2010 22:10

fingers crossed for you and dd xx

fidelma · 30/09/2010 22:19

is she feeling unwell?

AnyFucker · 30/09/2010 22:35

oh, how curious

I hope you get to the bottom of it (excuse the dreadful pun)

any news?

My nearly 4 yr old dd had a very similar thing last week - red blood in poo, and a little in the toilet bowl. None on her bottom when I wiped though. She also had tummy ache before and while she went. As she's only 3, I stayed with her (she was crying on the loo) and even though she wouldn't have described it as a hard poo, I could see it was a very big one (sorry!) and it hurt to get it out. She said her bottom didn't hurt, her tummy did - but she must have had a small tear inside somewhere. No bleeding since.

I hope your dd's turns out to be something similar, a one-off, and that all is well.
