Is it at all possible to prevent your DC's getting nits?

We use the nit prevention tea tree shampoo every other day and they don't have long hair (DD will eventually have a short bob but she's only 2). They have fine, almost blond hair so I'm hoping any bugs will be easy to spot.

Was it an urban myth that they only like clean hair (that's what we were always told in the 70's).

I really don't want nits in the house as I have no idea how I could treat it on my hair, I tried the nitty gritty comb with conditioner on my wavy hair to see how it works and it nearly pulled it all out Confused.

Use a fine tooth comb once a week during a hairwash, if there is the odd one or two you will break the cycle.

This is the only stuff that worked for usnitmix. They also have preventative stuff - you just add a few drops to a jug of water and use it as a final rinse.

going Good point, I can just about get the nitty gritty through the dc's hair withouth too much fuss, might involve a few choc buttons but it's do-able.

after the summer of nits in 2009.
I now nit comb twice a week and use a spray of water and tea tree oil.
I was also told very cheap hairspray is a deterent!
Best advice is the nit combing twice a week, as it will catch them quick.

I think a little going over with a nit comb that catches any eggs as well as the bugs is really good, on top of what you already do.

I'm pretty sure that they aren't too fussy over the hairs cleaness. a) Because when I was at school, the 'unkept' children seemed to have as many, if not more, nits as the rest of us, and b) because they can't tell if the head that they're jumping on to is clean or not, they just go for it!

I think that may have been something our mums told us to make us feel better if we got nits lol x

Thanks all Smile

I will leave the comb out and make sure I do it a couple of times a week.

We comb every week without fail with conditioner and nitty gritty, DDs have shortish hair so we cover it with a mist of cheap hairspray - bug-free 1 year and counting despite repeated outbreaks at school.
