dd1 (6) has been diagnosed with faecal impaction and feels really poorly. She was vomiting for all of yesterday and today is really lethargic. She now has movicol to remedy the problem (and obviously I will be addressing the problem through diet and liquids too) but I just wondered if anyone else had any similar experiences or advice to share?

Poor thing. Quite unusual in a 6 year old I would have thought, unless she has been holding it in out of anxiety.

However, if she is that poorly, I would keep a close eye on her. Lethargic in the context of a child of any age ALWAYS scares the hell out of me.

Any sign of a temperature, if the vomitting does not settle, tightness across her belly, or if she does not get better take her STRAIGHT into hospital.

Vomitting without diarrhoea can be a whole pile of things, including appendicitis (missed in my son 3 days in a row when I took him to the hospital).

My DD has faecal impaction on and off and regularly takes Movicol.

What do you want to know?

lactulose similar. it can take quite a long time (up to six months) for the impaction to resolve and bowel movements to normalise if it has been a problem that is, er, building up for a long time...

is she having any difficulties with soiling? ds still has issues on/ off. he's nearly 9.

it's not uncommon tbh.

Ah right, I was sort of expecting things to move quicker than they are iyswim! How on earth do you get 12 sachets into them when they are at school all day? Do they have accidents at school and how do you manage that? DD1 has never had a problem with that before, but I am kind of expecting that now. How much pain were they/are they in with constipation/impaction as dd1 is crying with it at times. She is off school at the moment as she is poorly with what we thought was appendicitis (still worried it might be) but what is more likely to be a virus but I am worried about when she goes back.

Have she been "investigated" rectally? We had to do that to assess the hardness etc.

Put the movicol into blackcurrant squash.
