Vomiting stopped but still high temp? Normal?

Dd1 (3yrs) has been vomiting copiously since early Monday morning. She's also had a high 39/40 temp, kept down to 38 with alternating calpol and calprifen. The last time she was sick was 10pm yesterday, so hopefully that's over now, but she still has the temp. Is that normal?

She hasn't eaten anything since Sunday (apart from a couple of bites of toast which haven't stayed down), but is keeping enough (but not much at all) water down not to be too dehydrated.

I'm thinking maybe the doctors tomorrow...?

It is not 'normal' to have such high temp, take your child to docs asap!

I disagree Rollmops. Children do get fevers you know - it's how their bodies fight illnesses! The temperature is responding to treatment and she has other symptoms - vomiting so she probably has a virus.

lukewarm - how is she in herself? It's good that the vomiting has stopped and that she is drinking. Will she take fruit or anything? Not oranges - too acidic - maybe melon? Use your own judgement - if she is alert and responsive, you probably don't need to worry. The height of the temperature does not mean anything - look at the child not the thermometer! :) If the fever is still high in the morning I would get an appointment. 3-5 days can be totally normal for a temp but it's worth getting checked out after 3 in case there is an underlying infection that needs antibs.

Hope she feels better soon. Keep us posted!

I agree that 3 days for a temp and vomiting needs a doc to check her over tomorrow. She may have a urinary infection, or somewhere else (ear?) Is she passing urine OK, if she is passing a lot less than usual, its not a good sign. If she's not passed any for 6-8 hours and is unusually drowsy she may need a doctor sooner, otherwise its usually safe to wait. You really need to look at the child not the temp as bubbley says.

I agree that its worth getting checked just to make sure there is not a secondary infection going on. It could all be virus related, but just check to make sure. Hope she is better soon!!

Thanks everyone, she's done that childrens miraculous recovery thing of springing up this morning, full of chat and upset she can't go to the childminders with her little sister! She's still got a slight temp, but I guess that's just her body fighting off the residual infection, and it's not bothering her. An easy day and some food and drink and she should be right as rain later.

I agree re temperatures, they are a necessary and useful tool the body uses to fight an infection. You just need to make sure they don't get too high, hence the calpol etc. Although we've got past the 3 day recommended limit for using the drugs, so if she hadn't been better today I would have gone to the docs.
