Shall I call the doctor or not?

2 1/2 yr old ds has been 'off' for a few days, not eating much, being generally a bit unwell. He woke up at 7 this morning throwing up, not a lot, but then he hasn't been eating much and it had been 12/14 hours since he ate last anyway.

He's been 'droopy' since, and keeps being sick. He hasn't managed to keep the couple of sips of water that he's managed to drink down, and each time he's sick now it's just orange. (bile?)

I'm in two minds to call the doc now, or wait until later today. Tell me what to do, please! (I've looked after other people's children and stayed calm when they've been ill for getting on for 20 years. but now it's my own child my head refuses to have sensible thoughts!

He's just nodded off on the sofa where I've made him a bed so I can keep an eye on him.

I would call the doc. He doesn't seem very well, and it has been going on for a few days. Plus he doesn't drink, get him checked.

if your instincts are telling you to go to docs, do it. trust yourself. you know your own child and the docs understand if you are genuinely worried.

shakerattleandrollover · 22/09/2010 11:12

hope hes better soon

Butterbur · 22/09/2010 11:13

It sounds like a virus. I'd keep giving him sips of cooled boiled water, even if it seems to come straight back up again. If the vomiting continues, look out for signs of dehydration.

Has he got a temperature?

If he seems unduly droopy and difficult to rouse, I would take him to A&E, otherwise, let him recover in comfort at home.

Thanks, will call now.

Told the receptionist his symptoms, and she's given us an emergency appt at 17:20. He won't drink anything, even tried an ice pole but he just put his tongue on it once and no more. Hoping this snooze will help and he'll feel a bit more like drinking something when he wakes up.

Chickenpox is doing the rounds round here, might it be that brewing?

FWIW I think you're doing the right thing. It may be chicken pox, but I don't recall mine being sick with it in the early stages...

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 22/09/2010 11:26

It would be an unusually severe onset of chickenpox -- generally they are just a little bit peaky/grumpy when viewed with the benefit of hindsight once the spots have come out and you think back to the last few days. The "off"ness would have fit with that, but the throwing up and being quite so ill today suggests that it's something else rather than chicken pox.

Probably just a tummy bug, nasty one going round at the mo (when aren't they?!)

dd1 was off food at the weekend, and since early Monday until just about now (fingers crossed, currently lying on me watching cbeebies), has been sick every few hours with a v high temp barely kept down a little with calpol and calprofen. No food, barely any water. Not much you can do except keep an eye on their temp and hydration, and ride it out (and keep the machine on perma wash). Dd2 was also up last night, I'm a wreck.

Not much the doc can do for a tummy bug, and they need all the rest they can get rather than a trip out. If you're not sure what it is, or you are worried he's really not right rather than just a bit poorly, always ring the docs. Instinct is a powerful thing.

KnitterInTheNW · 22/09/2010 11:31

He just woke up and was sick again, and managed to have a couple of sips of water after. Doc is only at the end of our road, so i'll wrap him up and walk down with the buggy.

how is he?better i hope...

KnitterInTheNW · 22/09/2010 21:59

Just saw this, thanks for asking Smile

He stopped throwing up at 2pm, slept a fair bit and thankfully started drinking this afternoon, went to doc who ruled out anything too nasty.

Came home, he saw me eating a peanut butter sandwich and wanted some, ate a fair bit and then asked for jelly.

Woke up about 45 mins ago and brought the whole lot back up all over his nice clean bed. Hopefully it's all out now though and he'll get a good night's sleep and then feel a bit better in the morning. He's really hot though so I'm going in ina minute to top his calpol up. Wish it luck for staying down!

Poor DS. Hopefully he'll feel better tomorrow and it is just a viral bug.
