Quick question about steroid tablets for asthma experts

DD (2) was in hospital at the weekend with a 'viral induced wheeze' and had a night of needing oxygen and inhalers. She was discharged yesterday afternoon with 2 doses of steroid tablets. She had one of the doses this morning. She is SO much better, no detectable wheeze (although we are still doing inhalers as instructed) - is it still necessary to give her the second dose of steroids, given her symptoms have gone and she seems completely fine? I don't want to give them to her unnecessarily, but is it a bit like anti-biotics and you need to complete the course?

Thanks

imo yes.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 20/09/2010 23:06

yes.

Yes it's important that she has all the steroids to fully reduce the inflammation in her airways.

yes, they can take a while to start working,if u dont give her the 2nd dose they might wear off, then you'll give her more and then u have to wait for them to kick in.

yes give it to her.

My dd had them at 8 months after getting bronchilitis for the 3rd time and my goodness they cleared her chest up soooo quickly.

Thanks very much everyone. We have given her the last dose and will see how she goes from here. We were told when she was discharged to keep up the ventolin every 4-6 hours, which we have done (although last night did not wake her to give her a dose in the night). I'm going to talk to the GP about a preventer inhaler, as the last couple of times she has had a cold, it has made her wheezy, which is exactly what happened with her older brother. He is now on a very low dose of preventer (one puff every evening), and has not had a bad episode since then. I was hoping we had escaped it with her Sad

The good news is that we previously had great problems getting her to take the inhaler, but now she is taking it beautifully.

What I am still confused about, both for DS (5) and DD is whether they actually have asthma, as they are both only ever affected when they have a cold.

Thanks for the link Pixie I may well join in!

fadingfast my ds (3) is the same, the past 4 times he has had cold he always ends up on steroids 4 once a day, anoxacilin (sp) 3 times a day and 6 puffs of his blue inhalor 4 times a day and also this time he needed a nebulisor at the drs too. He is 100% fine the rest of the time never wheezes or anything. I have booked a dr's appointment to discuss this further as something needs doing.
