Ds has had a cold and teething all week. Developed a temp. Now 39.3. Gave ibuprofen 2hrs ago and still high. Now just given calpol. Does not seem distressed. Dh says if still got temp in morn will take to ooh. I am freaking out though as dd suffered from febrile convulsions. Is dh right?

all I can say is if you take her in, they will strip her off to her nappy and stick her under a fan, keep her topped up with calpol and nerofen.
If you can do that at home its better for her and saves you a trip.
If after all that it doesnt work then take her in imo

RaisedFromPerdition · 18/09/2010 22:33

Right, how old is he?

Is he rousable? Other symptoms?

Is he stripped off? Drinking plenty? A fan in the room is good if you have one.

The risk with febrile convulsions is not the temperature but the speed at which it rises.

How long has he had a temp for?

mummynumnum · 18/09/2010 22:41

Ds Is 7mths. Has had a cold all week and sounds hoarse. Saw gp earlier in week.Said was a virus. Got hone today and noticed felt warm when checked on him half an hour after putting to bes. Gave ibuprofen. Checked before bedtime at 10. Temp still high. Roused him and gave calpol. Is now half an hour later and temp is 38.8 now which is lower than earlier. He is sleeping soundly enough. He is teething I think as well.

He has had milk feeds tonight so is feeding as well.

If he's feeding well and his temp is going down, he's rousable, no other symptoms (bar the cold and sore throat), I'd just carry on with the medicine overnight and see how he is tomorrow. Any change in symptoms, trouble breathing, temp no longer responding to meds etc, then see somebody tonight.

If you ignore the fear of the febrile convulsions, are you otherwise concerned that it's something beyond a virus? If you can relax and reassure yourself that the risk of febrile convulsion is minimal, does the fear subside a bit?

Took ds to a and e this morn. Got middle ear inf in both ears. Had two doses of ab's and alternating calpol and ibuprofen. Temp at highest is 39.1 but coming down to 38.5 with medicine. Bless him!

Right if he is on ab's and temp is now not coming down with medicine do I go back to a and e. Temp seems to be sticking at just over 39.

get a couple of flanels/face cloths, put in cool to tepid water, wrap round feet, yes feet, see what happens, if have any lavender put a drop in water for face cloths.

Quackmonster · 19/09/2010 20:11

by way my first 3 reacted best to nurofen but youngest reacts best to calpol, you can't tell which works best, keep going.

SayItWithWine · 19/09/2010 21:02

Takes around 24 hours for antibiotics to start working.

dikkertjedap · 19/09/2010 21:10

Antibiotics work best if spaced out, so if needs three doses, ideally give a dose every 8 hours, even if it means setting the alarm. I tend to give the maximum dose of calpol and calprofen in such a situation and again spaced out (CALPOL every 6 hours and calprofen every 8 hours) - I set the alarm clock if necessary and make a schedule with day/date/times and cross off each time I have given it. For us this seems to work best. Also, it is good to give child only light clothing if any and a sheet but make sure not in draft or too cold ... and lots of sips (drinking) and depending on type of anti biotics plus also with nurofen eat a little even if just one bite or so. Good luck - my dd went earlier in the year up to 41.6 C we called ambulance as we are quite far from hospital and was Friday night (typical) but they advised for her to stay home in spite of very rapid and laborious breathing.

mummynumnum · 19/09/2010 21:58

Ds is doing ok. Had all ib he an have today. Told by nhs direct to wake and give some more calpol and one more calpol dose in night if necessary. If goes above 39 again must phone out of hours gp. Said an would take good 48 hour to really kick in. Such a worry.

Yes, but hopefully antibiotics start working soon. Lots of cuddles and stories also help. Agree, very stressful. Good luck.

mummynumnum · 20/09/2010 20:39

Right after a good day he has taken turn for worse again. Temp 39+ and now waiting for out of hours to ring as given calpol and ib with no effect.

oh dear, poor ds.
dd has a cold with a high fever as well, but she is happy and alrt when awake.
only wearing a onsie and sleeping bag at the mo whixh helps. wet socks also help getting the temp down.
hope he is better really soon!
