I HATE GPs/ hospital visits and avoid like the plague, they only need to look at my history to see I haven't had care since high school. Yet as soon as you have a dc with a problem so many in the medical profession seem to presume you're a fussy mum who is dying to get to talk to a doctor.

I have been treated like a boderline nutter by some because my ds has sevrere diarrhea/ rashes from the first moment he has touched cows milk formula. Like I make it up and I want to sit in their waitinf room.

Why is it so hard?

I guess this is just a place to let offf steam. I feel like I became a Mum and I'm no longer a professional woman with a brain but I am now to be treated like the slowest of the slow. I still have logic! I still see reason! Having a child, even a pfb, does not mean I no longer know what 'normal' is and does not mean that my child not gaining weight week after week is fine.

I had EXACTLY the same treatment over childhood milk allergy (sounds vaguely simiilar to your DS's reaction). Did you ask for a hospital referral? I refused to leave my horrible GPs office until she referred my DS. Then the hospital then confirmed that I was right. You know your son better than anyone. Push for what you know is right.

strawberrycake · 18/09/2010 21:35

I've been referred, it's the hospital end that is a nightmare. If they're not dying they shouldn't be there. He's 4 months now and 1lb heavier than at 5 weeks!

It's like they think you had your brain removed too in labour. I get a feeling it's like this for many mant problems. Wht must it be so hard? For the firt time dh and I are envying the US system.

Oh, I see. So what have they done so far to investigate?

Must be bad if you're envying the US system! Wink

I've never experienced this, to be honest. I have had

DD1, falling over for no apparent reason, taken very seriously by the GP and fast-tracked to hospital, kept in overnight then seen by a Paed consultant, who asked a colleague to see her, then passed on her care to a third Consultant who had a special interest in neurodisability. Whole host of tests done, and more scheduled, taken very seriously, later diagnosed with a brain malformation.

DD2, severe reflux, went to GP, who referred on spot to hospital, seen and given reflux meds, went back and asked for specific meds, given without question.

DD3, ok so far.

I do wonder if it is because I am a RGN, so they talk to me on a professional level, or if it is just that I live in a good area. I do have friends/relatives from the area that say what you say though, so perhaps it is my RGN status that swings it.

All I can suggest is play the game. Keep a diary, so that you can be very specific. Say "I gave DC this at this time, and by this time, he was in discomfort. I gave DC this at this time, and by this time he had a rash," or whatever.

I am about to keep a diary for DD1, because her weaning a medication is coinciding with flooding her bed through a pull-up. Coincidence? Possibly, but I think it is too neat for that.

imregular · 18/09/2010 21:48

And yet, so many people I have talked to just thought that it was 'normal' because it was their first!

YANBU.

However, first timers do sometimes stand out a bit more as there is a little bit more drama attached

Had this loads with DD1 but tbh I was terrible with DD1, and am a lot calmer with DD2.

I think Lougle area comes into it, frankly we're not in a good area/
