Oh great! DS in A&E with bashed wrist

DS(9) fell over roller-blading yesterday afternoon and had a sore wrist, despite wearing protectors. Still very sore this morning with limited mobility. DH took the children out this morning, and has just rung to say that DS complIning that it's worsening, so he's gone to A&E.

Is it possible it's a fracture, even though he could still grip? If it isn't, might it still require a period of immobility?

Anyone?

DH went out without his phone, so I don't know how they're getting on.

not a medic but it's quite possible. I was in the same position myself a while back. First aider at ice rink said not fractured.
Could use it a bit but next day was worse. I had 2 fractures.
Try not to worry.

Thanks! I'm not exactly worried (as DS was not distressed), but am rather wondering how long it's all likely to take (I suppose they'll need to x-ray?) and whether he's likely to come home in plaster.

Even if it's broken he may not come home in plaster, depends on what's the best way to heal. I have a gut feeling from your description that he has fractured it (I have broken arms 3x).

Try not to despair, they heal ever so fast at this age. I broke my arm at 10yo and survived. I remember seeing a toddler at hospital with 2 broken upper-arms (now that would be challenge as a parent).

He's back - with arm in plaster.

Probable scaphoid fracture (apparently they're hard to see on x-ray); review in fracture clinic in 10 days.

I also fractured my scaphoid (as well as radius). They are very careful to double check scaphoids as the bone has a notoriously bad blood supply which can make recovery slightly longer. I was in plaster 8 weeks. You usually have to have your thumb at a particular angle which is awkward. But I coped, and carried on working ok.
hope it goes well, Go back to fracture clinis if the first plaster gets loose after swelling goes down - i.e. before your 10 day appointment.

Scaphoid you say? They are not really very well developed at 9. Luvvies is right, they can't see a fracture right away which is why people have to go back. I hope all is well.

It's all fine; seems it was a nasty jar rather than an identified fracture.

Plaster came off when he was reviewed. Need to keep him off the rougher contact sports for a while, otherwise all back to normal.
