Thinking about giving MMR now (DS age 9)

DS had the individual measles and rubella vaccinations yonks ago but mumps was not then available. I have just received a letter from the clinic saying it's time for his second dose of measels and rubella but the single mumps vaccination is still not currently available (at least Merck are not making it, I don't know if anyone else is).

I feel differently now about the MMR (indeed my younger DC had the MMR). Shall I give DS the MMR now and be done with it I wonder? Has anyone any experience of this please?

DS has just started a new school and Id hate for him to have some unpleasant side effects from the MMR and have yo have time of school right now.

TIA

My DS is 9 he had single jabs including mumps. Dr Michael Debenham ww.debenham.uk.com
if you wish to do to do this I think he is still offering this service.

I would talk to your GP about the MMR, but definitely not leave him unvaccinated.

I was VERY anti MMR when DS was a toddler, and refused to let him have it, so he had rubella & mumps individual vaccines (NHS hospital was happy to do it), but no measles vaccine was available at the time.

He didn't get a second booster before starting school either.

Then NHS was no longer allowed to give individual vaccines, and I couldn't find a clinic who would ONLY give measles vaccine.

So DS went thru early years with no measles protection at all.

When he was 8 we booked a holiday to the carribean, and as measles is more prevalent there, we took the decision for him to have MMR. He had one injection, then the second one about 3 months later, I think.
DS was fine, no reaction to the vaccines at all. If you are worried tho, can you get the appt for a Friday afternoon, so he would be over it by Monday.

BTW I still think individual vaccinations would be a preferable option. To my mind pumping 3 sorts of virus antibodies into someone all at the same time seems ridiculous.

My boys got their MMRs just before they started secondary school. I wasn't willing to agree to it earlier but couldn't afford single vaccines.

Personally, my concerns about Mumps was the ONLY reason I did it as there is quite a lot of it around and if boys catch it in adolescence it can cause sterility (know two men this happened to).

So, if it were me I'd go for the MMR if that is the only was to cover Mumps but discuss with your GP first.

My ds had singles - then had the MMR about 12 months ago aged 8.

Like others said - I felt differently about it now ds was older

thank you for all the replies. I think then i will try and get an appointment with my GP first to discuss options.

The mumps part of the vaccine does wear off apparently and there is a massive outbreak amongst older teens. I spoke to a dad today who kids had all had MMR (14 - 19 yrs) and they all had mumps one after the other. I heard the health mob were looking into vaccinating older teens, especially students but i'd not be surprised if this is shelved. The doc said similar about the missing mumps when DGS had single measles and rubella.

He has been struck off for fraud. Do not attempt to use him.

Dr Mike Debenham has been struck off the Medical Register for falsifying prescriptions.

I had my second MMR on Wednesday through work, as I am too old to have had it in childhood. Both times I had a slightly achy arm for 48 hours, but no redness or swelling round the injection site, no fever, no rash, no swollen glands, nothing but a very mildly achy arm.
