Ring NHS direct.
It will pout your mind at rest.

Exogenesis · 10/09/2010 23:25

Not wanting to be too over familiar, but has she had a poo recently? Or does she need to fart?

Sorry ...

resistanceisfutile · 10/09/2010 23:29

Period pains?

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 10/09/2010 23:29

Where abouts it it hurting? Any vomiting? Have you had a press to see where it's painful? And there's the when did she last poop question.

bruffin · 10/09/2010 23:38

is the pain in the middle or the side and has it moved?

MittenKitty · 10/09/2010 23:39

thanks for replies

she cant remember if she poo-ed today - which makes me think she didnt

doesnt sound like period pain to me - and she hasnt started yet so not sure it would kick off with cramp like pains so strongly?

its making her double up with pain and cry out every now and then but i'm trying to convince myself its easing off a bit

I have spoken to doctors out of hours service who spent ages debating if we actually fall within their area but then have promised a doctor will call back - so we'll see

Appendix?

If it's really strong I would be off to A&E, tbh.

MittenKitty · 10/09/2010 23:43

just checked again and she doesn't think it's in any particular place, it's more on the inside she says than tender on the outside - and she doesnt think it's moved so i'm thinking she's just really bloated and a bit constipated maybe?

thanks for the responses - i'm pretty sure its no big deal but it's very nice to feel people are around!

and yes winnybella - i did worry about appendix but this seems to be coming and going a bit now and maybe appendix pain is more continual? not sure, hope doctor will ring soon and think of questions that can get more specific answers out of her than I can

I might be wrong but I think in kids appendix pain is not always localised and can seem to be something else iyswim.

If she's in tears that's not really normal imo. Constipation shouldn't be so painful for so long.

Not a doctor, though, so I might be wrong.

winnybella · 10/09/2010 23:50

just googled and it says pain can be coming and going and then perhaps becoming sharp and consistent?Confused.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 10/09/2010 23:55

I'd take her to A&E to be honest. It could be appendicitis, there's no way of knowing though so it's best that she's looked at.

Northernlurker · 11/09/2010 00:02

Dd1 had stomach pain at the end of last summer term. In her case we ended up at the out of hours docs and got a diagnosis of constipation and exhaustion complicated by the fact that she was getting in a state about the pain and that was making it worse. She perked up enormously after reassurance at the docs and had the next day off school on their advice. Did her the world of good! The nurse we saw thought there could be some gynae type thing going on as well - sort of gearing up of the system. You need to rule out an appendix and ime the reassurance for them is a big thing. Also - hot water bottles and encourage her to drink lots. If she's anything like my 12 yr old she won't be drinking enough.

MittenKitty · 11/09/2010 00:03

thanks everyone - it has died down a bit now and she's trying to sleep. Doctor was pretty thorough - albeit by phone - including asking to talk to her directly to ask if she was pregnant!

but the pain has subsided a lot and she's happy to try and sleep

really appreciate everyone's comments - feel like it was a bit of a false alarm but it seems so much worse earlier on

I had acute appendicitis last year and the pain did come and go. Also if the pain is really bad it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly where it is coming from as it just feels like everything hurts.

I really think you should take her into A&E. Better safe than sorry, and they will really not mind if it turns out to be nothing serious. That is their job and doctors always say always err on the side of caution, better that than suffering more serious complications because of delay. You do not want to end up with septicaemia due to burst appendix - very serious and possibly life threatening.

How is she feeling now?

Northernlurker · 11/09/2010 00:09

Mitten when I took dd1 the nurse asked her for a urine sample to check for signs of infection. Dd obliged and the nurse took it off to test. It was only later I realised she most likely tested for pregnancy as well. It's a bit alarming but it's good that they check because ectopic pregnancy would be a likely explanantion for the pain of course.

Cross posted - glad she is feeling better. Though if the pain comes back in the night you really should take her in to A&E.

Fingers crossed that a good sleep sorts her out.

winnybella · 11/09/2010 00:14

What Dancing said- if the pain comes back, take her to A&E without delay.

Agree about A&E if the pain comes back. And don't get fobbed off. I had acute appendicitis when I was 9 and was also doubled up and crying with the pain. The first doctor who saw me did a very uncomfortable and embarrassing anal exam then said it was a urine infection and sent me back home. I was back in the next day and had my appendix out within 24 hrs, then stayed in the hospital for about 2 wks before well enough to go home.

winnybella · 11/09/2010 09:37

How is she today?

MittenKitty · 11/09/2010 16:32

thanks again all for your concern - today she is of course tons better - she slept well when she finally got to sleep - about 12.30 - wheras I spent all night half listening for her

but i think it definitely was too much food, not enough pooing - and yes Northern Lurker - not enough drinking - really need to remind her more about that - and get a few more vegetables and fruit in

some useful info/tips here in case it happens again.

And Meow, of course a Meow can ask a Kitty about poo - we're family

thanks all
