He fell over and hurt himself so started crying, he couldnt catch his breath and went blue and floppy, his eyes rolled around too.

This is the 2nd time this has happened now recently.

He is fine now just abit shaken.

Is this a normal thing? my other two have never done it.

Did he bang his head?

lollyheart · 10/09/2010 20:04

No he didnt, the first time was whilst having a tantrum.

Lolly he may be breath holding but I would take him to the gp to be on the safe side
It would be a good idea to keep a record of them to take to the gp ie how long it lasted what he did before and after
Hope he is ok

sounds like breath holding to me especially as first time was tantrum and second time was shock (of hurting himself)

it is scary to watch but not a big deal and lots of toddlers do it and grow out of it

as soon as a child faints they start to breathe again so no harm can come to him

if worried see GP but it doesn't sound terrible to me

TonariNoTotoro · 10/09/2010 20:09

I've read on here that blowing on their face/mouth can help shock them out of it?
(if it is breath holding, def check with GP)

anniebunny · 10/09/2010 20:11

One of my sons regularly did this between age 1 and 2. Whenever he hit his head he would give one long cry, not breathe in at the end, go blue and pass out unconscious. He then breathed again and was fine after a few minutes apart from twice when he had a seizure before coming around about 15 min later.

Docs said seizures were 'reflex anoxic seizures' ie brain resetting itself after being briefly deprived of oxygen while he wasn't breathing. I did lots ofresearch myself and discovered that many children who breath-hold are also anaemic so got doc to give DS a blood test and lo and behold he was anaemic. Shortly after starting iron supllements he stopped passing out and hasn't done it since!

I would say don't worry about it. Docs will prob call it breath holding but there are two sorts of this- the 'I want my own way so I'll stop breathing until I pass out' sort and the 'stopping breathing due to shock not on purpose' sort which is what your son and mine have/had which won't be helped by the usual advice to ignore it. Also if your son does have a seizure don't worry about it, put him in the recovery position and ring either your GP or take him to A&E as we had to stay in hospital overnight both times it happened so that they could make sure he was ok. And if you want to try iron supplements they can't hurt and might help stop it.

HTH!!

Activate is right if you blow on their face it makes them take a breath

semicolon · 10/09/2010 20:16

Yes my DD 2 has reflex anoxic seizures. They are very common. This sounds like it.

Usually they appear to faint after a fairly minor bump, roll eyes, go a bit blue then need to sleep.

Go to GP get checked by neurologist. They might want to run some heart tests. But don't worry. It's harmless and they grow out if it.

Thank you all.

It does sound like breath holding to me, i will pop him to gp on monday.
