One to GP because DD's head measured too small and the other to an op-something or other because of possible squint in left eye :( The health visitor tried to reassure me that she wasn't too concerned seeing as DD1 has quite a small head too (every child on her class photo has a bigger head and lots of thick hair, my DD has a very small head compared to them and v thin hair...) Aso DH has a smaller head than the average bloke..she said DD could just be dinky and fine. I hope so :(

And the possible squint, she said that babies dont have a bridge of the nose yet and sometimes it can give the impression that there is a squint when there isn't..is this right? She could see i was anxious and i think she was trying to make me feel better!

I know we will find out at the appointments but does this sound quite worrying or what? I cant tell because i suffer from anxiety so tend to blow things out of proportion..everyone is going on at me that health visitors get you worried for no reason but im not sure Confused Could do with a little reassurance :(

Oh forgot to say everything else was great her development is spot on and even above her age at the moment, no signs of any problems or anything just head measuring small (in the red line on the charts) she is right on average length and weight..

My ds looks like he squints - and it's just his nose. Have had it checked twice as I have a very bad squint, and it really is true.

bigstripeytiger · 01/09/2010 20:25

It sounds like your HV might just be being careful.

If your DD is developing normally and also your DH has a small head then it is most likely to be a normal thing rather than a problem.

The thing about babies sometimes looking like they are squinting when they arent is true too. No harm in seeing the optometrist though.

I dont think that either of the above sound especially worrying, but now the issues been raised, probably worth going to the appointments for reassurance.

i don't know about the squint thing, but i had a big panic with dc3 at 28 weeks as the sonographer told me the measurements were all wrong, baby was 'titchy' and must be an abnormality etc. went for another specialist scan who said yes the baby did appear to be pretty small but that scan measurements are notoriously unreliable. as it turned out, she was my smallest baby by far but still perfectly within normal limits. but i'm slightly puzzled as to why a small head measurement would make them refer you to the GP? surely you need another scan with a more experienced sonographer to tell you more?

My daughter got referred for a squint too at 9 months and she didn't have one. Her head wasn't even measured.

Thanks for the reassuring replies :)

I am definately taking her to the appointments, but feel a little better about it after reading your comments :)

oh god, sorry, i did wonder how they detected squint (embarrassed) hope all turns out fine!

TotalChaos · 01/09/2010 21:28

we had the squint thing with DS, he got referred when he didn't have a squint, as HV was being cautious (bridge of nose thing) and my mum had a squint.

neverenoughMEtime · 01/09/2010 21:33

Thankyou totalchaos, good to know she wasn't making up this bridge of nose thing just to calm me! :)

ladysanders dont be embarassed:) and thankyou!

the technical term is epicanthic fold - that if a baby is very broad across the top of the nose, it can make it look like they have a squint when they don't.

LilyBolero · 02/09/2010 10:08

I had loads of eye appointments when I was a baby because of the nose thing!

They are quite right to refer you on though, with eyes it is EVER so much better to pick things up early, as earlier intervention (if there is a problem) has much better results.

Hope you're not too worried - she sounds fine!

neverenoughMEtime · 02/09/2010 19:59

Brilliant,thanks so much :)

Will wait and see what happens at the appointments then. I agree, im glad the HV referred us too but tend to go into panic mode about silly things Hmm So thanks for helping to put my mind at rest ladies!
