anyone had molar coatings? just realised that ds has check up today and dentist will start banging on about them as before. Not cheap, but are they worth it, and what about the stuff in the coating - is it totally safe?

Unless your child has cracked teeth, a really rubbish diet and never brushes I really don't see the point. Is it a private dentist?

My DD had it done, not sure what's in it but she has gorgeous teeth. She had the first lot done in Thailand where it cost the equivalent of about 10p a tooth, her second lot was done in Switzerland at a much greater price. For me it is to do with a dentalphobia that I have. I really don't want her to suffer the way I have. I do make sure she brushes well and we limit her sugary snacks, but even so..........

My ds had them done as he got his adult molars very young. Was a quick procedure, had to just keep his mouth open for 10 mins or so, no pain or anything, just a coating over the top of the natural fissues in the teeth. My ds has no fillings and healthy diet had it done free on NHS.

DD had this done through the school. They said it needed doing every 6 months - does this sound about right? Also, they coated all her teeth, not just her molars and it looked awful for about 24-48 hours afterwards Hmm.

Was very quick and not at all painfull but I'm still not convinced it's entirely necessary

I think this is what ds is going to have to have done. His adult molars are coming through hypoplastic because of all the antibiotics he has had. Can anyone tell me what is the approximate cost?

sharbie · 01/09/2010 13:59

ours was done for free in uk

I think ds's will be. From what I can gather he is entitled to one lot of major NHS treatment free of charge and then we have to pay. I need to have a chat with the dentist to work out which one is going to be cheaper so I can pay for that and get the other on the NHS.

heymammy - I think your lo had fluoride painting whereas I think the op is talking about fissure sealant of the molar teeth.

just got back from dentists, where both ds and dd had 2 molars each done. Quick andpainless. Decided it can only be a good thing after reading a bit about it. As to cost, I can´t say yet as first, I forgot my purse, and second, I am going back to sign up for an annual family plan thing and the dentisit said that it was all inclusive. Before I said I´d sign up for the plan she said it was around eruo 40 per tooth - we are in spain. I read that they can last from 2 to 10 years.
