Nosebleeds and other first aid issues

I just thought I'd post as DD had a nose bleed earlier this week and I realised I didn't really know how to deal with it, other than mop her up. I've never done a proper first aid course beyond the basic antenatal stuff so thought it would be good to post a reminder of how to deal with various issues.

So can someone tell me what I am suppose to do about a nosebleed and feel free to ask/post about other things to do when your kids are ill or hurt themselves.

Ask your DD to sit on a chair, bend her chin toward her chest and pinch the top of her nose.
Never ask her to look at the sky as blood will go in her throat. If you have some ice at hand, put some at the top of her nose.

Thanks, I couldn't remember if it was head forward or back. Either way it's quite hard to get a three year old who is scared of 'bleed' to do anything sensible Grin

Ice pack on the back of the neck helps. It halps constrict the vessels and slows blood flow. Just remember to squish the fleshy base of the nose. Dont stick anything up her nose as it will stick to the clot and when you pull it out again the bleeding could start again.

You can do basic first aid/peadiatric courses at St Johns or the Red Cross. Or just buy their first aid book. It can tell you all the facts of what to and not to do.
