Blood in nappy

My 14 week old DS had 3 small streaks of mucousy blood in his nappy last week. He's exclusively breastfed, apart from a few licks of mint choc chip ice cream given by DH the day before. Not a weaning food in my opinion, either. I have got a cracked nipple so he could ingest traces of blood that way, but I wouldn't expect it to look red when it comes out the other end. He's a great one for bringing back milk and I've never seen anything in that. I don't think he has to strain to poop. He has at least 5 dirty nappies a day and seems happy and healthy otherwise. It was just the once I saw it but I wondered if anyone can advise me about it? Thanks,

My DD, now 18 months, had this starting about 4mo; she was exclusively bf, and it got much worse after we started solids, to the point where she was passing lots of mucusy blood and not much else Sad... She'd always had quite loose poos, and it turned out to be cows milk protein intolerance. We (me too as was still bf and it was affecting her through my milk) had to cut all milk products, which cleared things up within a couple of weeks.

I'd guess it's possible that the ice cream could be to blame if your DS is also cmp intolerant. I'm not a medic(!) but from what you've said if it's not happened before/since, and is otherwise well I'd just keep an eye out for now or go to your GP just for a quick check over.

Hope that helps Smile

hi my dd had something like that twice in a day when she was a few weeks old, cue dash to A&E she was carefully examined nothing seemed to be amiss and it never happened again
reasons suggested were

  • cracked bleeding nipple
  • something residual from birth
  • small fissure in anus
we never worked out what it was and she was perfectly happy and contented only it scared us silly

I would just say keep an eye on your DS take him to see the doctor for peace of mind

I hope that helps

We had this with ds1, along with green and mucousy poo, on one of the few occasions he was given formula (was 99% bf). Turned out it was cows milk protein allergy in his case too.

I don't think it would be caused by ingesting blood cause that would be digested. Could be an anal fissure, could also be a virus but I would at least be cautious when introducing cows milk if I were you.

If is does turn out to be an allergy (and I may v. well not be) come join us on the allergy board and remember that cows milk protein allergy is v. common and the vast majority of children outgrow it within a few years.

Hope I haven't freaked you out.

Thanks for that reassurance. I am watching his nappy contents and there's been nothing else but I couldn't somehow leave it and could find nothing in print about it.
I feel more confident about a wait & see approach now. Thank you all x
