18 month old with rash, any idea what it could be?

My DD has been under the weather for a few days, with a temperature of 38.5 yesterday. Today I have noticed that she has developed a rash of pink raised pimples, some looking like whiteheads, in the areas where she has previously had eczema, around her knees, ankles, wrists, fingers, with a couple on her bottom and on her face.
I am planning to take her to the out of hours GP tomorrow.
Any idea what this could be?

In particular is it worse round her bum, face/mouth, hands and feet?

DS has just had hand, foot and mouth and it was very like this.

smallblackflowers · 29/08/2010 21:09

Her hands and feet aren't great but only a couple of spots on her face and bum. Will google it and look at some pictures.

Look in her mouth, see if there are a lot of what look like ulcers in there. Or if she refuses tooth brushing and is off food etc.

If it is hand foot and mouth, it's very contagious.

It is possible that it could be a non specific viral rash - especially if she has been under the weather. My ds had this a few times at that sort of age. Hope she is better soon x

I know her mouth is sore, as she has been crying when eating textured foods, but has been ok with ice lollies and blancmange. My DH has also had a sore mouth for the last week or so too.
She's asleep at the moment, but I'll look more closely in her mouth tomorrow morning (if she lets me).
wmmc did your GP diagnose your DC or was it just something that was going around?

Yes GP diagnosed. Actually brought a load of medical students in to inspect the lesions because they'd never seen it. It's very common. The spots come in crops so they will appear almost like chickenpox then burst and go pink. Soles of feet spots are pretty indicative - you don't get spots on the soles of feet with more rashes.

The bum spots are because its an enteric virus.

Paracetamol/ibuprofen is the treatment - keep her cool and rested and it passes. He had three bad days and today he's much better. Sudocrem for any really sore bits.

Some good pics here

Didn't check the soles of her feet, but there are spots on the tops of them. Again will check tomorrow morning. Probably ought to take her to the GP as I am also pregnant, and should find out if there is any risk to my unborn DC.
Thanks for your advice Smile

How pregnant are you? If you are in the very late stages of pregnancy it is dangerous because to a newborn it can be very serious. But if you are under 34 weeks it's not a problem. :)

smallblackflowers · 29/08/2010 22:11

Am 17 weeks pregnant. From what I have just read it is uncommon to get it as an adult due to immunity from exposure as a child, so here's hoping.

Well I thought this but DH and I have had a mild form of it - sore throat, blisters in the mouth and for me spots on the feet. Apparently it's the strain of the virus you get immune to and there are a few. DD seems not to have got it - lucky bugger.

whomovedmychocolate · 29/08/2010 22:18

Tis no worse than the common cold in adults - you just go off your food, have a headache and a sore mouth IME. Again, paracetamol is the treatment. Bonjela is v good on the mouth sores.

Dawnybabe · 29/08/2010 22:21

We've just had it - dd1 had a horrible sore mouth for over a week and wouldn't really eat, but no spots. Dd2 had a few blister-type spots on her palms and soles but nothing in the mouth, and I got mouth ulcers and blisters on palms and soles. It is uncommon for adults to get it but not impossible! There's nothing you can do about it and yes, it is really contagious. And quite annoying.

Hi - just an update from me. Took DD to the walk in centre this morning and they didn't know what it is, so referred to out of hours GP who also couldn't be sure...
Hand foot and mouth is a possibility, but she has a rash on her thighs and arms which doesn't look usual for HF&M. She is being treated with antibiotics as some of her rash looks infected and also for herpes simplex - the cold sore virus - that can also take advantage of skin that has been weakened by eczema. We have to return to the GP tomorrow if the rash has spread any further.

Oh dear, sorry she's still ill. Fingers crossed you get a definitive answer. A lot of these rashes end up with a 'well it could be diagnosis because they all tend to look alike.
