Any asthma mums around? Need some advice about dd1.

DD1 is 4. Diagnosed with asthma at 19 months, on Becotide and we use Ventolin when needed. Following bad flare up this time last year she started on Singulair with good effect.

She has hayfever and had to use Ventolin quite a bit this summer for wheeziness but no full blown attack since on Singulair.

She has caught a bad cold and cough - doesn't seem to have gone to her chest, as in no audible wheeze YET but she is coughing and having trouble clearing mucus.

Should I take her to OOH now or see how she goes? I dread a night of sitting and waiting and watching. If she gets wheezy she will need Prednisone and maybe an antibiotic.

What would you do?

Thanks

Thanks Pixie. Sorry to hear you dd2 is suffering. Must be something going around. DD2 who is 21 months has it too but she has no complications with asthma.

I'll give OOH a ring and see if we can get an appointment this afternoon.

She is always worse by night.

ggirl - I keep meaning to ask for a prescription for Pred to have as a standby but not sure if the doc would give it.

At least I have learned from her attacks last year that when she is bad she must have an antibiotic because I was in the ridiculous situation of being told by different (always OOH) doctors that I was to decide if she needed antibiotic or not Hmm

Pixie - Its the nights that always worry me. I'm looking at her now and she seems fairly well but I know if I wait til bedtime then I will probably end up getting her out of bed and taking her in so might as well go sooner rather than later.

yes ask for pred as standby
I have some for myself and for ds.

brimfull · 29/08/2010 13:12

becasue you will alwys need it on a bank holiday-it's a given

suiledonne · 29/08/2010 20:28

She seemed a bit better but I took her in just in case. The doctor says her chest is clear and to just give Ventolin every few hours to prevent a wheeze developing.

Fingers crossed the Singulair is working and she will just have a normal cold like other kids her age.

I'm glad I took in her though as the doctor was nice and at least I was able to send her off to bed feeling happier.

Thanks for checking in Pixie.

Back from an eventful trip to the doctor - she went from that little bit wheezy stage to full on attack very quickly.

She threw up on the doctor's floor Blush

Got a big dose of steroids there and an antibiotic so hopefully it will get her through without hospital being necessary.

We have more Pred too which makes me feel happier.

Pixie I started a thread in Chat too looking for you.

DD had Prednisone in the docs, one dose of antibiotic and several puffs of Ventolin.

She is sleeping now but breathing is shallow and jerky.

Would you give it a bit longer to see if the meds start to work or take her to A&E now?

The GP said to go with my instincts but I am ill myself at the moment and tired and not thinking straight.

Thnaks

Hi Pixie, we are still at home. Don't worry about not seeing my message - I was just looking for a sympathetic, experienced ear Smile

Spoke to a nurse in Paediatrics at the hospital and she told us to put her on the nebuliser at home and see how she is.

We just did a second neb and she is a little better, breathing easier.

It sounds awful to say but the hospital is miles away and I don't drive so DH has to take her and he really can't miss work (self-employed on a training contract and no-one to cover for him) so if we can cope at home it would be better.

Of course if she really has to go then so be it.

Thanks again and I'll keep you updated.

Fingers crossed.

my 10 month old was on nebulisers i found them amazing but the new paedatrician does not recoomend them at all and says 10 puffs on a ventolin with a spacer is better and safer?? i founf the nebuliser better- is this advise true ? do you think its because he is a baby? sorry to read about the asthma attack-asthma is a terrible condition and so many peopel just dont realise how awful it really is-i didnt (i was a teacher who had asthmatics in my class)until baby was born

suiledonne · 31/08/2010 09:52

DD ended up in hospital last night. The nebuliser was only giving a temporary improvement so DH took her in and they admitted her.

enimod We were told the same advice regarding the nebuliser by a paediatrician last year. He said if she was bad enough to need a nebuliser then she should be seen at the hospital. I think this is the advice for babies and children now.

With dd1 the nebuliser helps but when she gets to a certain point she needs oxygen as well.

DD is back home after 2 nights of nebulisers and oxygen. Still not 100% but they were happy to let her come home so hopefully she will be ok tonight.

I definitely got the impression that they (doctors) suspect I have been lax with meds or something as there was talk to showing how to use the inhalers etc but the nurse watched us and said we were fine. We have always been very strict on taking her inhalers and never miss the Singulair either so I don't think we have anything to feel guilty about. The nurses as usual were top class - so kind and understanding.
