Back pain in a 8 year old??

My DD is 8 years old and has recently (in the last 6 months) started suffering back pain. It is mostly when she is in the car, but will continue for a few hours afterwards. I have never heard of children with back pain and was wondering if anyone else's children experience this?? Thanks

One of mine dc often complains of aches and pains in lower back after we have had a long spell in the car, have alsways thought it is that the booster seat doesn't have enough padding though. Have to say I don't think it continues for hours afterwards. My ds gets back pain, but that is related to his hypermobility. Sorry I can't be of much help? Hope someone with more ideas comes along saoon for you.

Back pain in children is quite common but usually clears up quickly. If it occurs in the car especially then tray another car seat or a cushion in the small of the back. If it doesn't help there are some more tips for prevention here Back Pain in Children. Hope it helps.

Physio here :)
Back Pan in children can occur if posture is very poor for sustained length of time, eg: slumped in car for hours without moving, or very heavy bag hanging off one children.
However, kids usually have a very pliable/plastic skeleton and musculature - they ping back very quickly after the cause of the discomfort has been removed.
Unusual to have pain persisting for hours afterwards as you mention.
Sometimes back pain can be referred pain from somewhere else in the body - ie: bad period pain/labour pain due to uterus cramps are commonly felt in lower back and people mistake this for a problem actually originating from the back.
I would get her checked out by a paediatric physio who will look at her and how she moves, then do special neural tests (all painless and non invasive) to see where the problem may be coming from.
Good luck!

Hi Op.
I am also a physio. Have you taken your DD to the GP with this yet? They can then refer you on. Sounds like you need a full assessment as it has been going on for so long. Good luck Smile

Wink we meant well though!

MangoMonster · 12/11/2011 21:41

I'd go to gp, could be kidney infection or bowl problems? Then see a physio...

Bowel not bowl.
