Colour changing eye, anyone have any experience of this?

First of all, I have taken dd to the doctor about this, her response was to say "well that is very odd" and then leave! (I have given them a very clear photograph showing the colour difference.)
I have now asked for it to be referred to another doc and am awaiting a response, in the mean time I was hoping that someone would have some experience of this very odd occurrence as I can find nothing out on the internet - not even really scary stuff!!

Basically my dd (12) has brown eyes but every now and again one eye (the same one each time) turns vivid green! The effect lasts anything from about 10 minutes to a few hours but it always changes back again.

Dd does suffer from hemi-plegic (sp) migraine which I suspect may be connected but I have no evidence for that, just a gut feeling!

So, has anyone come across this before and have any thoughts for me? I am unsure how serious I should be taking it as the doctor was really very dismissive and just seemed to find it amusing Hmm
No amount of googling is giving me any help either!

Apparently my eyes go very green when I'm furious. Perhaps I'm a real life witch. Grin

Sorry, I shouldn't joke, but I've heard this (re my eyes) often. I'm 33 and still going strong, so don't panic too much. (I've had very detailed eye tests at one of the best eye hospitals - for something unrelated - and no-one has mentioned anything odd just yet.)

Ooh, that is interesting, thank you! Do you mind if I ask you what colour your eyes are (when you are not mad Grin)?

I know my eyes change colour but it is within the spectrum of their usual colour and, apparently, it is usual for green eyes (like mine) to change to some extent.

I wonder if it is just my genes battling to assert themselves? Grin

My eyes vary a bit - usually brown/hazel-y, apparently sometimes more grey-ish, and then greener when I'm mad. I'm a medical marvel. Grin

Bellasformerfriend · 26/08/2010 20:22

Ahh, hazel is the most likely colour to change, mine were hazel when I was young and changed a lot with my moods then settled towards green around puberty. My extensive (and totally useless!) research suggests that both eyes changing at the same time is normal but there is nothing about one eye changing on its own....maybe you and dd are both medical marvels Grin

We are, we are. People should pay money to spend time with us, really...

I hope someone with better knowledge could explain a bit more soon!

Mine used to change colour as a teen (I'd totally forgotten about this and you've reminded me!)

When I was 12-13 I had grey/blue eyes. When I was raging they'd go bluey green. They're now bright blue.

interesting that it's one eye though, did you dare google? It could be that one eye might end up a different colour (a sister of a friend of mine had hazel eyes til secondary, then one eye gradually went blue)

MisSalLaneous · 26/08/2010 20:38

Hehe. Will hand in my resignation tomorrow!

idobelieveinfairies · 26/08/2010 20:43

Mine and 2 of my childrens eye change colour. DS1 and myself have hazel eyes but some days they can be almost completely green!

DS2 was born with completely blue eyes but sometimes he has green eyes!

I find the change is more with indoor/outdoor and other types of lighting???

I have never enquired into why this happens, i just pressumed it would happen a lot

Bellasformerfriend · 26/08/2010 20:51

I did google and got no-where!

Apparently it is perfectly normal for both eyes to change at the same time with mood/light/sun exposure etc.

It is also normal for one eye to change colour but this is gradual and permanent not something that happens for short periods of time.

Dd's changes do not seem to be linked to anything really, eg she could be sat next to me in the car (we have a daily 40 minute journey) and one minute they are both brown, the next one has gone green...so no changes indoor to outdoor or anything like that... hmm, flumoxed Grin

I may post again about the migraine thing and see if anyone has noticed this as a symptom before, what do you think?

Yes, repost about the migraine thing. I do get crippling migraines too, so who knows if there's a link

MisSalLaneous · 26/08/2010 21:01

Bella, I don't mean to scare you as you know how internet diagnoses is usually a load of bull, but this does seem to suggest you should see a doc if one eye changes colour.

Could you ask your gp to refer your dd to Moorefields Eye Hospital if you're near London? They're really good.

Bellasformerfriend · 26/08/2010 21:10

Hmm, thanks MisSalLaneous, it does say "if your adult eye colour...." as dd is only 12 I am not too worried but yes it would seem that it is a good idea to take her to the optician. The doctor did give her a good examination so i am pretty sure there are no problems. Still better safe than sorry!

Thanks JTGK, I will repost tomorrow evening!
