gave calpol at 9.30pm when temp was 39.1, but it's now up to 39.3. She's asleep, only a nappy on, when she was awake she was smiling and seemed happy. Do I wake her up in half an hour to give her ibuprofen? Am panicking a bit (am hopeless when they're ill) and DH is useless fast asleep with headphones in

I would go with all the previous advice, i find ibuprofen much better for fever than calpol. Prob a virus, you may get a body or leg rash a few days after just to warn you, Oh and my lovely dd starts to vomit once she gets to 39.5 .. nice!

thanks for asking bubbleymummy, she's so much better this morning. Had a terrible night on Sunday, her temp got to 39.7 and she was burning up and shivering.

Called NHS direct in the morning who told me to give try and keep it below 39.4 and told me to give the full 10ml of Calpol, windows open etc etc and to go to the drs if it got to 40.

She wasn't well all day yesterday and we went to bed together around 8pm (I was knackered from no sleep the previous night) and checked her every hour and her temp didn't go back up after the calpol wore off so I didn't feel the need to give her anymore.

This morning she woke up and smiled and started grabbing DH's nose so she seems to have fully recovered Grin. Thanks for all the advice and reassurance

That's great news Migola! I'm so glad she's better. It's very scary when they're sick. Shivering is actually how the body heats itself up to the temperature the hypothalamus has set (sweating is how it cools down) so that's why when you strip them down you have to make sure they aren't shivering otherwise it's counterproductive! :) Hope you manage to catch up on some sleep yourself!

This post is ancient I know, but just wanted to say it's set my mind at rest about DS, who's 2y4m and has suddenly run up a temp of 39.4 this afternoon. Of course it would be coming up to a long weekend and DH is out, triffic! Anyway, thanks for the link, very useful, and I feel less panicky now. MN to the rescue again!
