Dd has had head lice for almost three weeks. Have nitty gritted several times-every two to three days. Last Saturday I used Derbac on us both as she was still crawling.

Tonight she is still itching, it is driving her scranny. But I think a lot of the itching is because she has really sensitive skin and is reacting to the conditioner. I don't use conditioner on her usually, just Weleda shampoo.

So, as much as I don't want to use chemicals on her, do I just try Lyclear or similar and hopefully get rid of the blighters once and for all, or carry on with nitty gritty and give her Benadryl for the itching. I have been doing this but it tends to give her a headache.

Apparently the term 'feeling lousy' derives from headlice! After 3 weeks of it, it's no wonder your daughter is feeling bad. Have you tried Neem Care? It's a natural product, made from Neem Tree extract. I swear by it, and regular combing with conditioner; has worked on my 3.

DS1 had nits for the first time a couple of weeks ago, I have t be honest I ran to lloyds pharmacy and bought some lyclear.

we used it on DS's and DH, (he would#t do me!) and that was it - all over. it was a put on clean damp hair, leave for 10 minutes rinse then nitcomb and that is it. I did the nitcomb for a few days afterwards and the nits bit by bit disappeared and we got no new ones.

if we got them agian I would go with the chemicals again for the quick result.

smoother her hair with olive oil - it is natural and will clog upt he nits and they will sleep and she will stop itching

leave it on overnight or put it all over her hair in the morning - then in the eve stand your dd on a load of newspaper and using a nit comb comb through her hair - with every single stroke clen the comb

continue to do the whole head of hair

now wash the hair - this treatment will leave your dd's scalp and hair smooth and soft

now blow dry the hair until bne dry

now using straightbners straighten the hair

repeat on tuesday and then every three to four days

you need this and this

Job done.

FlyMeToDunoon · 21/08/2010 23:02

We have had them all summer and I have combed and combed and used Hedrin and Full Marks to no avail.
So I am interested to hear about Neem and Lyclear.
I was horrified when Full marks treatment still left moving lice.

Oneandnomore · 21/08/2010 23:08

Thanks all, Lynette I have been using Nitty Gritty comb. Think I will go with the Hedrin.

catbus, I will look at the Neem Care for the future as am sure they will return Sad

Crikey Flyme, stubborn little things aren't they. Think I will forget the Hedrin and go straight for the Lyclear.

I can only guess that the hair straightener is a very good weapon
lyclear sometimes worked, but it was 5 years ago - maybe they changed the formula?

FlyMeToDunoon · 21/08/2010 23:15

Some folks say you must wash all bedding and soft toys which I had previously thought to be a complete over reaction but now.....

Oneandnomore · 21/08/2010 23:18

I have been changing her bed every two days. Maybe thats why I haven't got them, the hair straighteners probably killed em off before they got a grip of my hair!

i agree with ivykaty my kids had had head lice for ages ive spents 100s on over the counter stuff and none of it works, i tried olive oil and i could see the dropping from their hair.

babyicebean · 23/08/2010 19:02

Try Neem oil - thick and is not the most pleasent of smells but has got mine clear finally.

Bought neem oil from a health food was about a fiver for a small bottle.

Apparently the stuff stops the little b***s breeding so they die of old age, combed them out and they have been clear for a fortnight.
Because the eldest has excema on her head we are limited to what can be used on her as most stuff either stings or feels like it is burning.

The tree they get the oil from is called the pharmecy tree and it can also be used on animals to treat fleas.

Oneandnomore · 23/08/2010 22:18

Thanks for all the advice. Tried Hedrin and dd hasn't reacted to it thank goodness. I will continue to comb every two days and will hopefully be clear in time for going back to school!

wash your head with curd and lime and if its not work then try lyclear it will definitely works

Elibean · 23/06/2011 17:16

Hedrin Once has worked both times on my dds (and me Hmm).

Takes 15 minutes. I Nitty Gritty afterwards, and then repeat process a week later. Totally effective - they didn't have huge infestations, not sure if it makes a difference. It IS pricey though.

Elibean · 23/06/2011 17:18

And, dd1 has very dry scalp - still gets cradle cap sometimes aged 7, and has eczema. Hedrin Once doesn't affect her at all, takes ages to wash out (3 shampoos) but hair is soft and lovely afterwards.

Confused I sound like an advert!

DeWe · 23/06/2011 19:02

People round here say steer clear of the 10 minute stuff if you really want to get clear. A lot of nits have resistance to them. You need the leave on overnight stuff.

LordOfTheFlies · 24/06/2011 12:28

I sometimes use cheap mayonnaise on DDs hair (elbow length- sigh)
I stays in place- I had nightmares with oil- and suffocates the little blighters.
Nitty gritty comb, rinse, wash, condition.

I've got the Vosene shampoo (headlice repellant) but I feel like I'm on a hiding to nothing sometimes!
