Does DD have Hand Foot and Mouth?

Hi. Noticed this afternoon that DD (who will be one in just over a week) has 3 small blisters on one foot, 2 on the other and one on the side of one of her hands....

I immediately thought HF&M but the websites I've looked at all talk about them feeling off colour, being off their food and having a temperature BEFORE any of the blisters start. DD seems absolutely fine in herself and I don't think she has any blisters in her mouth. Am hoping it's not chickenpox, although I know it's good to get it out of the way...

So my questions are,

  1. does it sound like HF&M to you?
  2. has she escaped the temp etc or can that come later?
  3. is this one of those viruses that when they've had it once they don't get again... or not?!

Thanks in advance for the wealth of mn wisdom I hope is about to pour down on DD and I Grin

DS, DH and I all had it when DS was 2.5. DS didn't have any symptoms other than the blisters and they were only on his hands and feet. DH and I felt awful for two days before the blisters. So based on my experience I would say she has escaped the temp etc.

DS and I have had it twice but I think that is unusual. Hope she is ok

DD had HF&M a few weeks ago, she was a bit off colour before the spots came out (off her food, not sleeping well etc) but we put that down to teething (which was going on at the same time). GP said spots on the fingers or feet are rare if it isn't HF&M so I guess it sounds like it. No idea if DD had mouth blisters as she refused to open up for me or GP! Friend's daughter was sent home from nursery with spots but she just thought it was nappy rash Hmm and refused to go to GP, didn't have any other symptoms.

Sorry, no wisdom, at the time I was just glad it wasn't chickenpox.

My DS2 had HFM recently and just had the spots, no fever, not off colour or anything. I noticed one spot on my hand and I felt absolutely fine too. But I've heard of people (adults and children) feeling very grotty with high temperatures too.

Thanks jammietart, TiggerHappy & Zam72, I guess I'll just have to wait and see what the morning brings, and keep my fingers crossed....!

We're meant to be seeing PIL this weekend, FIL has been having chemo for lung cancer and is quite unwell... ok to take DD do you think, so long as they don't have any physical contact? And they're meant to be babysitting for us on saturday night as DH and I are meant to be going out cos it's my birthday

Hmmmm.....I thought HFMD was meant to be really quite contagious. I guess he might've had it before. But I guess I wouldn't want to risk it with your chemo/immunosuppressed FIL. Anyone else that could babysit??

CaptainNemo · 19/08/2010 22:43

No Sad Oh dear. Bye bye birthday. (It's all about me y'know Wink)

It does sound like it's hand foot and mouth. You sound ask your fil's doctor for advice - if he's immuno suppressed then he may no longer be immune to it and be more vulnerable.

Sounds like HF and M, also know as coxsackie virus. My dc picked it up for the first time when we lived in USA, very common there, much more common than here, There are about 80 plus different strains of the virus, when you get one of them you will get immunity to that one, and a few others, but by no means all of them. This is according to our US paediatrician. Most adults have come into contact with it, and so have immunity, immuno suppressed FIL will be susceptible to it though. Reactions can range from just a few blisters and no other symptoms to being really unwell. When my ds had it first time he got a temp of 42, couldn't eat or swallow because his mouth and throat were so full of blisters. DD got it at same time, and had two blisters on one foot and no other symptoms! Both have had in since in UK with varying degrees of severity.Good luck, and happy birthday! Smile
