desmopressin dosage advice

dd1 (10 yo) is on desmopressin for bedwetting. she's been ok with it up 'til now, but the last 2 times she took it on a sleepover at her mates house, she was a bit wet during the night.

she's on another sleepover tonight (I love the summer holidays!) could I safely up her dose from 200mcg to 400 mcg (would still be within limits according to BNF)

anyone any experience of this?

TIA

Hi,

Our only experience of it (see thread below) has been quite negative but I gather it works for some kids. I'd definitely get medical advice before doubling her dose. Could be that as she gets bigger the drug is too dilute, but I'd still be uneasy just double dosing without checking first. (See comments about it blocking urine and high urea levels in kidneys on desmomelt thread below.).

Hope her sleepover goes well. We started on it for a sleepover but won't be using it again. V bad side effects.

sorry to hear about the side effects reality. what were they? if you don't mind me asking.

you're right about checking of course. It's just the dr mentioned upping the dose if it didn't seem to be working.

she has paediatric appt soon. starting to get us both down now. Sad.

I have no advice about dosage but just wanted to say that I was a really late bed wetter as a child. We tried everything and desmopressin was the thing that worked for me in the end. It was fantastic.

Hope your dd is ok

fwiw, I think (from quite a bit of experience) that if the child wakes up for any reason after taking it - which could easily happen on a sleepover - the conscious brain over-rides the desmopressin effect.

my bedwetter used to hide a dry-nite inside his sleeping bag & put it on when nobody could see - belt & braces approach! but desmopressin did work for him when nothing else did.

Could she take 2 with her & if she does wake, take another 200mcg?

thank you tillyscout it's amazing how many people were late bedwetters, and have been able to reassure dd that it will end (our lovely gp included)

that's really interesting ponders. I think giving her the 2 tablets to take is a great idea.

thank so much

oh, just remembered, the important thing about desmo is that they're not supposed to drink at all after taking it, & that's another thing which could easily happen on a sleepover if the others are drinking & she forgets. So remind her about that too Smile

jooseyfruit · 19/08/2010 20:40

yeah she does know that, but have reminded her just in case!
