PLEASE HELP!! 9yr old high temp and retching

She wants to be sick so badly but can't bring anything up except for spit and she's retching really violently. I've emailed NHS Direct (they're really busy and this doesn't seem like an emergency). For background info, she's had a high temp (104) but this broke about 2pm today. Perked up but has just (9pm) started retching.

Any advice anyone??

Give her some water, then she'll vomit water. Small bits at a time so there's no exorcist scene in your house.

Once she's keeping water down, try some toast.

There's a bug going round.

If she still has any sign of a temp give calpol again to bring it down as fever makes children vomit.
does she have a headache, can she put her chin on her chest, any photophobia?? Any rashes. Any abdominal pain? Are there any significant symptoms? They may be relevant. Is she confused?
Anti sickness tablets not advised as if its the start of gastro enteritis and a bug it needs to get out of the body.

Thanks Belle...we've given water and still just the retching. I'd give anything for a little exorcist action! Was just about to give up and swap places with her dad so thanks for the response.

We're due to go on hols tomorrow too! Sods law! Can't remember the last time she was really ill.

Fingers crossed she'll get it out of her system and we'll be o.k. to travel. Tis only UK bound, so she should be o.k.

Thanks scotty. There's no rash, no headache, no photophobia. I'll check the chin and chest thing now. No confusion, just tired out and fed up with not being able to puke. Calpol was given just before the last retching episode. I did think it might have caused it, but am hoping not.

I'll go check the chin and chest thing. I was hoping to get it out, rather than do anything anti sickness as I know it doesn't help to keep it all in, as they say.

thanks for advice...off to swap now

Keep an eye out for other symptoms, there really is a vomiting bug going around, I had it last week. Antihistamines are a good anti-nausea medication if you have some piriton in the house, I tend to not use it though, it's got to come out.

I hope all is well and you have a lovely holiday. Light meals for her when she's feeling better though, once she can tolerate fluids then some toast Smile

beammeupscotty · 13/08/2010 21:26

Doesnt seem to be anything too serious at the moment, but keep eye out for other symptoms and keep on top of fever. Fingers x it doesnt go into full on D&V just in time for hols - sods law really, holidays are like a voodoo curse when it comes the childrens health!

Great tip from St Mary's hospital A&E I had when DS was in with vomiting once (went blue..) they said syringe 5mls of water every 5 minutes. (Use alarm/digital watch - something to focus on) . This will not make her sick (if she is she would have been anyway) but this will gradually help her hydration without upsetting stomach. poor you. Totally understand. My 8 yr old has had so many sick bugs. x

huffythethreadslayer · 13/08/2010 21:33

Hi herbie...no throat problems as far as I know. Cos she's 9 she's pretty good at explaining what's wrong with her, though she's so rarely sick, she doesn't understand terms like headache particularly....

I think it's just a vomiting bug but she's got nothing down to bring up!

Will keep feeding her water til it works one way or another! I'll double check the throat thing though...

Thanks Gemg. I keep checking back here, just in case anything useful comes up, but I really think I ought to relieve the old man before he accuses me of neglect :) I'll try the syringe thing.. It'll make her smile a bit if nothing else...

Thanks....really, really appreciate the advice..

Hopefully you're off on your holidays now... but I hope she feels better and this was resolved one way or the other!
