My 6 week old baby girl is suffering with colic. Im breastfeeing her. I've tried infacol, gripe water, colief, dentinox, burping her, all sorts of positions to comfort her but nothing seems to be working. Has anyone got any tips or advice? I don't know if it makes a difference but she was born 4 and a half weeks early. Any help is much appreciated!

You poor thing. Have you tried the Happiest Baby on the Block techniques?

Swaddling was a lifesaver for us in the first 3 months. And we had a recording of our tumble drier playing all night and every nap time.

I also found a simply baby massage anti-colic/wind routine done 3 times a day helped my DS.

Have you been using infacol for a while ? I seem to remember it took a while to work but once it kicked in it was magic stuff. Also I think if you are breastfeeding -your diet may have an impact but I can't remember what you need to avoid - some of the books on baby care give you this information- maybe spicy things sorry I am only guessing I can't recall the details now!
I know it seems a long time away but at around 13 weeks it just sort of dissapears - so there is an end to this.....

You have my sympathy, it may not feel like it at the moment but it will get better.

Both of my 2 suffered badly from colic and we tried everything that was available, but we found gripe water and the following things worked best :-

  1. give them a drink of cool boiled water after each feed.
  1. Tummy massage at each nappy change.
  1. When they are suffering, hold them with their backs to you with your hands on their tummy (we found the warmth helped them to relax and then burp up)
  1. If all else fails try walking up and down the stairs ... Sounds mad but we found the jolt of the stairs helped any stubborn wind to move.

I hope this is of some help and congratulations on your little girl!

Sorry for the double post, not quite sure what happened!

could it maybe be reflus rather than colic?? symptoms are similar and if none of the colic remedies are working this could be why??? or it could be that something you are eating/drinking is upsetting her....I drank too much orange juice to begin with not realising that it was to acidic for her! good luck

Just remembered, it helped DS if I fed him with him sitting as upright as possible. I would put him to my side, facing in the opposite direction to me, and that worked really well until he got too big for it.

On the tummy massage, it's important to only massage in a clockwise direction, never anti-clockwise, apparently.

Here's a description of the sort of routine that worked well for us.

Prem babies do seem to suffer more with colic and sometimes reflux.
My Ds had horrendous (24/7) colic but stopped at 3 months. It helped to carry him in an upright sling all day.

With my DD I was so afraid of this happening again I'd read cutting out dairy in my diet could help. I did this and she never had colic - but she may never have developed it anyway! I wasn't prepared to risk it!!

You have to be very careful cutting out dairy to ensure adequate calcium etc. and be aware that things like biscuits have milk producs in them so lots of label reading. It depends on how desperate you are.

I am not a big believer btw that it is trapped wind, I think it is more likely to down to immaturity of the gut, possible not able to properly digest certain proteins.
