Children not feeling ill when they are?

Is this normal?

The following has happened with my DS (aged 4):

He had a cough that dragged on, he didn't seem bothered and said he felt fine so when I eventually took him to the doctor I was shocked to find he had bronchitis and a bad ear infection. He insisted his chest and ears had not been hurting.

He had gunge coming out of his ears so I took him to the doctor who said his ear had perforated. He insisted he has not had ear ache.

He was coughing and worried it could be worse than he let on I took him to the doctor who said he had bad tonsilitis and laryngitis. He insisted he did not have a sore throat.

And now this week he has had a bad sinus infection but insists his face and head does not hurt.

I'm actually a little worried that I'm not going to know when he's really ill. In fact all four instances above I should have taken him to the doctors earlier than I did.

Is this normal?
I don't want to panic everytime I think he's ill, but he says he's fine!

He obviously has higher pain threshold than others or is just more stoical!
