Thrush in 8 yr old, what treatment were you given?

Dd has had an ongoing problem in her vagina since June. After eventually having an antibiotic for discharge, she developed thrush. Been giving clotrimazole cream for a week now but still sore/stinging. Is this the only treatment for this age group? Does the cream actually sort out right inside? Any advice welcome, awaiting nurse to call back.

I worked in a pharmacy and when we were selling clotrimazole cream we advised that the cream would only treat the itching/stinging and would not actually clear the thrush and that either a pessary or tablet would have to be taken in addition to using the cream. These guidelines were only aimed at over 16s though because its not licenced to be sold for children under 16 without a prescription.
I dont think pessaries or the fluconazole tablet can be prescribed for children either, i certainly never saw it during my time in the pharmacy.
I would ring the doctor or your pharmacy for advice as nurses dont know as much about medicines as they do.

Probiotics can help with thrush because they restore the natural balance by replacing the good bacteria that antibiotics kill off. Also not to scare you but thrush is common early symptom of diabetes. If no raging thirst, massive weight loss, I wouldn't worry at all.

if it is fungal in origin your doctor can prescribe diflucan suspension which would be more effective. has he done a swab.

you must go to a gp for this as the capsules cannot be used at all

Thanks for the replies. Took her back in and they put her on the same type cream but with a mild steriod in it. Doesn't seem to be helping yet but continuing treatment. Yes, thanks voleinahole. Have brought her some Actimel and live yogurts. She suffers from eczema usually on other parts of her body but maybe thats why they are now trying an added steriod. Yes they have done swabs twice which came back clear even when she had the smelly discharge. At first the symptoms were stinging and discharge, which finally lead to having antibiotics. Discharge cleared but thrush was brought on. She doesn't seem to have the bad itching now but still red and stinging? We shall see how it goes and probably end up back in on friday again. Alypaly, thats very iteresting about diflucan. I had been told originally in hospital they could give something to her orally if swab showed up anything and then nothing showed so discharged. However, at the doctors I have been told only this cream is suitable for children.

they can also prescribe nystatin oral suspension and i believe some doctors give daktarin oral gel on prescription. Sometimes they get sore if they wipe their bums the wrong way and get a faecal infection. Ordinary plain yoghurt put on the area is also soothing.

white discharge normally indicates a yeast infection..candida albicans. a smelly green discharge normally indicates a trichomas infection.

trichomonas (sp)
