How much should a 5 and half year old girl weigh?

I havent weighed dd for around 2 years. I just put on her the scales and she only weighs 2 stone 1 lb!! She always had failure to thrive when she was a baby and was always on the bottom line on the chart, but surely she should weigh more than that now!!! She eats a well balanced varied diet. She does have chronic constipation and is on laxatives for this which ensures she has a poo once a day, her tummy is quite often swollen as well so now i am worried.

My dd is 5 and weighs 2st 11lb. Her best friend is 3st 5lb (I don't weight them often btw, I was having a weigh in with my friend and the girls wanted to 'have a go' on the scales).

So it does sound as if your dd is a little on the light side.

DD is a tall 6.2yo (wears 8-9 clothes) and weighs 3 st 6lb

I havent put her on the scales for around 18 month and she was nearly 2 stone then. She doesnt have a dietician anymore, she had one when she was younger but they discharged her as her diet was excellent and advised me how to up her calories, which i still do.

I to think the chronic constipation is not normal. She is going to see the constipation nurse next week so might ask about reviewing her. She has had it since she was 2 when she with held for 14 days and ended up i hospital, they just put it down to a phobia. I have asked for some tests to be done as to why if she doesnt have her laxatives it immediatly goes hard but they just say as the constipation only started at 2 and not from birth there is nothing wrong. She does get tummy ache a lot and it swells and she complains of it hurting especially after greasy food, so i might enquire about irritable bowel syndrome

Please dont get too het up about graphs and percentiles and statistics.

I did. My daughter on her first birthday wore clothes aged 0 - 3 months and seemed quite odd toddling around in such. Paediatrics also wrote 'failure to thrive' on her notes, which greatly upset me as to me she was thriving fine. Alert, bright, walking, etc, did not suggest failure to thrive to me.

Your daughter has a balanced diet. You can do no more. Some of us are just designed to be petite or small built. I dont know much about the constipation except the obvious - fruit and water, but I didn't want you to be worried or upset or too concerned about her weight. My grandma told me to look around the school playground and see the children of all differing heights, sizes, etc. Family genetics plays a part too.

I was a first time mum - ready to listen to professionals. Common sense from grandma prevailed. I think there's too much paperwork, recording on graphs these days. If your daughter is reaching development milestones, eating a varied balanced diet, she'll be fine.

My daughter is now 21, weighs 7 stone and at 5ft 1 is very proportionate. No need for all the fuss and labelling.

DD was badly constipated at one point which led to hard poos that gave her recurring anal fissures. Very painful bowel movements which made her want to keep it in, which led to increased constipation, etc.

Pediatrician said (1) eat cooked green vegetables regularly (2) avoid bananas and chocolate as these make "hard & big poo".

In addition to following the above two points, DD now eats 1-2 dried apricots a day and goes to toilet pretty much every day.

DD 5.8 is 2 stone 2lbs, she is 115cm (I think) and is a slim but not skinny.

Littlefish · 03/08/2010 20:29

Dd weighs 3st 1 lb. In her Reception year weigh & measure, she was on the 49th centile for weight (she was 5 and a half at the time).

annoyingdevil · 03/08/2010 20:44

Mine is 2 stone 5, very petite and the shortest in her class

onepieceoflollipop · 03/08/2010 20:48

try here:
nhs chart

I think it is ok from age 5 years.

ArseHolio · 03/08/2010 20:48

Dd's 3stone 5lb buts she's very tall for her ago

she's 5.8

muffint · 03/08/2010 20:51

Mine is nearly 5 and weighs 2.5 stone. I know some of her friends are similar height and a stone heavier. I wouldn't say my DD is particularly small either - wears age 4-5 clothes - slim waist and long legs. I think some just don't weigh as much for whatever reason. Small head, light bones??? I would say don't fret about it unless you're worried about her eating / constipation.

mummytopebs · 03/08/2010 21:01

I am not worried about her eating at all. Thanks for your responses i am not concerned anymore re her weight as it seems similar to some who have responded. Thanks for putting my mind at ease

My DS1 is 2st 3lb at 5yo. He's always been 0.4th for centile - think he might actually be off the chart at the moment. He does eat well sometimes, but has a small appetite and can be a little fussy. He's in proportion but is one of the shorter ones (about 3 boys same as him height wise) but I'm sure is definitely one of the lightest. He was referred to failure to thrive clinic as a baby but I think (as did they) that its just his constitution. (Although DS2 is complete opposite end of the spectrum - at 2yo he's 2st 7lb!!! Weird genetics!)
