Can a doctor give a 2 1/2 yr old anything for vomitting and diahhrea?

If his ONLY symptoms are vommiting and diahhrea, nothing else, not listless, not whingy, full of energy, cheerful, breastfeeding a LOT so not dehydrated, just keeps vomitting and doing liquid poo, what could it be?

Should you even taking a vomitting, squitty child to a doctor's waiting room and risk spreading the germs?

How long would you reasonably 'wait it out' with a hydrated, cheerful child who just has a vomitting, squitty thing?

Have you taken him to the Dr? Dr may do a stool sample and see if its bacterial. Someone I know their DD had this for 4 weeks recently and it turned out it was some notifiable food poisoning thing that she needed antibiotics for.

I'd leave it 5 days before going as long as they were hydrated.

I would wait a day or two, assuming all the signs you mentionstill good. Doc once told me could last up to two weeks. Gave me Dioralyte to avoid dehydration. Could be anything, hope better soon

We have an appointment 1st thing tomorrow. Today is day 4.

I keep thinking he must be better, and then... well I'll spare you the details, but he isn't better.

DS recently had a bug like this (he's 5 though) and I made an apt for day 6 after the onset as it wasn't getting better and he's lost his appetite / was in pain too, though well hydrated, and of course he was better the morning of the apt (so cancelled it). Apparently 5 full days can be normal and so long as any fever is well managed and he remains well hydrated than it shouldn't be anything more serious. Hope he's better tomorrow!

1-3 days vomiting and 5-7 days diarrhoea. symptoms should start worse and ease off. I wouldnt take to doc unless unwell and dehydrated before the week is up. there is basically no point as its only vile dioralyte thats given and most kids hate it! It doesnt cure or shorten anything but gets them up and about a bit quicker after the symptoms finish. If it continues beyond this time or LO becomes unwell take in then as may need assessing physically for dehydration and stool sample sending.

Day 6 now. Still very squitty but no vom since yesterday evening.

He is tentatively eating the odd little thing and keeping it down.

Saw doc yesterday. Stool sample showed nothing. Doc gave him rehydration packets which ds declared "YUCKY" and has refused to go near.

Doc also advised ds should eat no milk, only yogurt, and perhaps some soup. Ds flatly refusing to entertain the thought of yogurt (which he usually loves) or soup. Instead is demanding milk chocolate pudding and tomatoes.

On the mend, I think, anyway.

Thanks all.

I took ds to doctors after 8 days of squitty but no vom and she diagnosed rotavirus, which can last up to 2 weeks. After then, she told me to take stool sample in for tests. Dairy can make it worse/prolong it, so stick to soups, plain food such as pasta, mashed potatoes etc and keep hydrated with sachets (although doc didn't mention these) and ds also declared them yucky. I had to dilute with squash and bribe him over a day to drink a couple of mouthfuls and then wash it down with water!

Hope your ds is on the mend after all.
