Can a baby sleep too much at 8 weeks?

I've just had a read of GIna Ford and whilst I was only reading it for tips (and got a few) I was shocked by the sleep rountine for a baby, it would be akin to torture for my 8 week old. Which is nearer normal, her book or my baby? What's the experience of others?

He's ill so sleeping even more than normal but naps today so far:

up at 7 (feed)
nap 8-9 (mini-feed) 9.10-9.40 (mini-feed)10.10-10.40 (feed) noon until now. so far.

The mini-feeds are because he's ill, they're only about 30ml to keep him hydrated. Proper feed around 120ml.

This is fairly normal, maybe he's awake 40min-hr between feeds normally, but not at all at night, feeds then sleeps. Night is roughly 7-7, I dreamfeed about 10.30/11. Some nights he wakes for a feed before 7, some he doesn't so I don't think his daytime nap habit affects his nights. By the time you've feed and nappy changed him (feeding slower in day) you're lucky to get more than 10 min of smilely play time before he's grumpy for sleep. At night he sucks in the feeds inside 15min as opposed to daytime slow looking around 40 min feeds. IS this excessive sleeping? Is such a thing possible at this age? As I said it's just stunned me to see her rountines contrasted to his behaviour.

He's bloody grumpy and screams for sleep if kept up for too long.

our baby sounds to me (mum but now leath experience etc) completeley normal!

Let him sleep

Your routine.

I work on the eat and then asleep within an hour of waking, sometimes they just eat, sleep, eat, nappy and sleep.

At this age in my experience (20+yrs) babies and young children need good daytime sleep to have good night time sleep.

As long as he's putting on weight then at 8 weeks I say let him sleep as much as he wants!!

I did Gina Ford with my first 5 years ago in complete desperation!! He was not a good sleeper but it was still tough. My second baby slept the clock round and it would have been impossible for her to do, sheer torture for both of us. Put the book down and let bubs sleep.

mine should have said no health experience sorry...

I'd have no intention of denying him sleep! Just wondering how he compared to 'normal'.

It's hard to even bathe him as he's bloody ratty by the time I finish. Have started the 10.30pm dreamfeed though and 7pm bedtime as I think he's got potential to so a little haywire at night with all day sleeps. Let him nap all day as he pleases though, bed by 5.30 if he wants! I nearly sh*t myself the other day, I woke up and realised he'd been asleep nine bloody hours! Though dh had feed him and he thought I had. He was breathing and happy when checked thankfully!
