DD fell on her head twice in one minute

She's almost 18 months. I was in the kitchen and gave her some juice. She took it with her and spilled some and then slipped in it and fell backwards on her back/head. picked her up, kissed etc and put her on the side to wipe up the juice and she went past me and slipped again, falling with lots of awful noise.

Floor is wooden and is old and a bit loose, so I guess it affords a bit more of a 'give' than tiles etc.

I called a doctor once before when she fell out of bed and she just said to observe her, so I imagine she'll say the same thing now.

I know kids fall all the time, but really the noise was horrible. She seems ok now, back of her head a bit pink, but it just happened a few minutes ago.

Anything I should do? Just thinking about horror stories about people hitting their heads and being fine and then their brain swelling and dying.

Anyone?

What would you do?

I would call NHS direct or your GP. They will probably say just observe her but best to get advice anyway.

I take it she is responding normally etc?

Don't panic! It happened to me last week (except my DD - 2 yrs) needed 2 stitches as she cut her head as landed on a step. The doctor said not to worry, children do this all the time, front and back of head are not serious, just watch for vomiting and if she appears to be dizzy, sleepy or off her food. It will become obvious very soon if something is wrong and I very much doubt it is.

HTH
It is a horrible thing I know, but, part of having a toddler!

Thank you.

Yes, she seems fine so far, just had a plate of cherries (cut in half, not taking any risks today! )

That's what I thought, that hitting the side of your head is worse.

Still, these falls looked quite spectacular, hence my rather panicked OP. Will observe her.

Yep been there done that with the panicking! (And the thoughts of "how am I going to explain this to social services?" ).

Have you given her calpol, she prob has a bit of headache now?

winnybella · 27/07/2010 17:14

Haven't given calpol. Should I? She seems fine, squealing with laughter at whatever her big brother's doing in the living room.

I can't really feel any bump- weird, as she definitely hit her head with some force, twice in the same place.

Prob no need then if she seems fine.

As you say, wood is actually pretty soft (unlike laminate). So probably not nearly as bad as it sounded.

Hope dd ok now. Just to say think you would be able to tell if it was really bad.
My dd fell on her head in the kitchen last year on ceramic tiles, first she cried but then went very sleepy could hardly keep her awake , we rushed her to hospital and while we waited at desk she was sick everywhere.
they took us through and they said she could go asleep id been trying to keep her awake as i thouhgt that was what you should do.
anyway when she woke they sent us home as she seemed fine but she was sick again that evening.I sat up all night watching her but she was fine the next day
Toddlers are a worry they fall such a lot.
Anyway hope your dds ok now
