Urine infection? Do children/boys get these?

Also, may be coincidence but he wee'd himself twice this morning after not having had any accidents for months. When I asked him why he hadn't gone to the toilet he said he "couldn't stop the wee coming out".

Should I go to GP? Or talk to pharmacist?

Yes that's what it sounds like I'd go to the GP.

colditz · 26/07/2010 15:03

urine infection. Definitely - and he will need to go to the doctors, today.

I would guess urine infection. And agree that because they are less common in boys they can be more serious when they do happen. Definitely an urgent GP appointment.

Jacksmybaby · 26/07/2010 17:38

Oh crap only just seen these responses, slightly alarmed but it's too late to go to docs now. I'll have to make an appointment 1st thing tomorrow, presumably not urgent enough to call out of hours service? (He doesn't seem too distressed, atm at least.)

Thanks for the responses btw.

Oh double crap, he has just wet himself again, that is definitely not a coincidence...

Don't worry. My DD gets lots of UTIs, it definetly sounds like one. Her first sign is wetting herself (she's 9) even before she gets to the stage of anything hurting.

Get him to the GP tomorrow.

MathsMadMummy · 26/07/2010 18:12

do you have an urgent access you can go to in the morning? (i.e. not having to make an appt days in advance)

make sure he stays well hydrated.

Thanks. Spoken to NHS direct, they say it does sound like UTI and to call out of hours doc, will call as soon as the line opens at 6.30...

Good oh re calling OOH, when DD gets an infection she can be fine first thing, wet herself a few times and then bad fever byt the evening, I try and get her started on AB's as soon as I can so I take her in the second it starts.

Is he out of nappies at night? When she has an infection I do put a large size pull up on her, just so she gets some sleep instead of waking in a wet bed as she will wet herself and can't help it. It also upsets her a lot to wake up wet so the pull up helps like that. She knows they are only for whne she is ill so it doesn't cause problems.

NO other advice as I don't know what they are like with boys, lots of ice lollies are good for hydrating thiough, or we make 'cocktails' with sparkling water, juice and fruit/lemon slices with a straw. She can down a massive glass of that in seconds!

Jacksmybaby · 26/07/2010 18:54

Thanks v. much. Now waiting for OOH doc to call me back. In the meantime DS has cried himself to sleep poor love , so have put him in bed and put a pull-up on him.

Have you given him some calpol? UTI's HURT.

Jacksmybaby · 26/07/2010 20:49

Been to emergency out of hrs clinic, wee testing ok on dip test but needs sending off to lab to double check. Got to go to GP tomorrow if he's still not right. Will give calpol if he wakes in night (he's just gone off to sleep again). Thanks all for advice.

The bloody wee tests are the bane of my life. I can always spot when dd1 is brewing a UTI and if I manage to get to my normal docs I get AB@s instantly as they know her history. If I end up at OOH they insist on waiting for test results, and 9/10 I have spotted it 'too early' so the tests come back clear. If they do come back clear but he still isn't right then insist on a retest ina few days.
YY re calpol, and I double it up with profen sometimes.

He will msot likely be off his food and miserable tomorrow, be prepared for that.
Let him wee in the bath if it hurts, again that's girl advice, not sure if its the same for boys!
DD1 has complete personality transplant with a UTI and just lies quietly ont eh sofa watching telly and dozing, perfectly normal but quite scary. Adn a high fever is quite possible as his body tries to fight the infection.
Don't want to scare you with all that info but I freaked out the first few times as they look so awful, but with AB's they can recover quite quickly.

Much sympathies, it's horrible when they are crap, but good excuse for a day of sofa cuddles and dvd's as well

Jacksmybaby · 26/07/2010 21:30

I could seriously do with a sofa + DVD + cuddles day!

How's he doing thsi morning?

Jacksmybaby · 27/07/2010 12:35

Perked up a lot and no problems (so far) with weeing so hopefully whatever it was he's over it... will keep an eye and take to GP if anything seems wrong over next few days. Thanks again for all the help.
