persistent diarrhoea - any point in going to doctor?

My DS, who is three, has had diarrhoea since we came back from holiday ten days ago. clearly he picked up some sort of infection/parasite abroad (we were in a tropical climate.) I was hoping it would be self limiting but it's showing no signs of going.
He is otherwise very happy and well, but it is quite a nuisance (lots of small accidents in pants etc) and can't be any fun for him. I am wondering whether to take him to the doctor, or is that a waste of time?

He needs a stool sample sending off. 10 days is a bit excessive. There are some wierd and wonderful things in foreign climates!

thanks. hmm, stool sample - lovely! i'm thinking he may have campylobacter/cryptosporidium or some such. but i'm not a doctor. he has terrible wind, poor little man. at least he's happy though and too young to be embarrassed!
