Teething

DS is eight months and the last week have really been hell He is in so much pain, its breaking my heart. I have given him Calpol, teething powders and teething gels and although they seem to be taking the edge off things he is still in a lot of pain.

But my main worry is how much he is eating... Should I just let him lead me for now? Today he has only had:

2 x bowls of porridge (breakfast and dinner)
A breadstick
A spoonful of mashed potato
3 x fromage frais

I feel especially bad about the fromage frais, but at the moment its one of the few things he is willing to eat (am guessing because they're cold and he doesn't have to chew) - is this okay? He is BF so is still having a reasonable amount of milk, although not his normal guzzle.

Am very stressed out with all of this, so any advice really appreciated.

My DS went off his food when teething so I just gave him more milk (he's BF). One thing that really helped was giving him food which was much more pureed (he's 9.5 months and usually has lumpy food) and had been in the fridge beforehand so it was cold. After about a week or so, maybe longer, his appetite came back!

Thanks Igglybuff - I think that's why he wolfed down his porridge this evening. Much more smooth than what he normally has. He has been fighting on the boob at the moment too; his entire mouth is bright white under the skin, I have a feeling once the first one has cut they are all going to appear!

Glad to hear its normal though, thank you.

DS was an early teether (first 4 teeth at 3 months - was horrid!) and suffered badly. I swore by Chamomilla and he had boxes of the Nelsons Teetha granules, but you can also get them in the pillules from Nelsons at 30c instead of 6c. It didn't stop it by any means, but I think it did help a bit. He went off milk, but not really off food. But I shouldn't worry about the amount of solids for a few days. Especially if he is BF too.

Poor little guy. It is rotten. My DS has all his teeth now but I don't know what to blame his crankiness on anymore!

Good luck, keep smiling.

SirBoob when you say his whole mouth is white - are the gums bumpy (I.e. you can feel outline of teeth too?). I just wondered if it could be thrush instead - which hurts babies like hell! Sometimes they can get it with no symptoms in mum.

Sorry if I've misunderstood your description though.

No, they're are bumpy And considering he is currently trying to eat his way out of his cot, am sure its his teeth

Yep sounds like teeth! My DS had a lot of trouble with the top two front ones - worse than the bottom two. And now they've cut, he looks really cute and goofy
