I think I'm being a paranoid mum so need a reality check please. My dd (aged 6) does judo and last week a boy threw her really roughly and she landed badly and had a big nose bleed from both nostrils. She cried a bit, picked herself up and carried on with the class - and seemed fine afterwards. This was last Saturday. Yesterday, she came downstairs and said she felt ill and was promptly sick. She had a high temp around 39.5 for most of the day and slept all afternoon. She was very hot to the touch, didn't eat and was generally unwell. At about midnight, her temp went down to normal and was fine this morning. However, she was complaining of a headache on and off so have dosed her up with calpol and she's been fairly active, eating OK and generally not bad. However, she just came upstairs with an enormous bogey hanging from her nose which was dark red with old blood - the other nostril seems blocked and I suspect the same is in the other nostril too. Do you think that the fall and this illness could be linked or does she just have a bug?? Please help - the bloody nose thing has got me worried now.

Thanks....

I wouldnt worry too much about the nosebleed - we'd all have one if we were thrown about! They can take a little while to settle. Hopefully any swelling around her nose will have settled and it doesnt look wonky??? Signs of a frontal skull fracture are double black eyes, bruising behind the ears, leakage of clear fluid from the nose or ear plus signs such as vomiting, confusion, headache etc. (Not necessarily all of course)

Relating the fever to the head injury you would be looking at bacteria getting from the nasal passage into the brain via the skull fracture. This would cause a type of meningitis- Fever, vomiting, confusion, neck stiffness, photophobia. As this would be a devastating bacterial meningitis I doubt it would settle with a rest and a dose of calpol.

Nosebleeds dont really relate to head injuries except in a mechanical way (fall onto nose!) The headache today could well be the affect of a viral fever and dehydration. Monitor her carefully, regular calpol and fluids and see how she goes. If youre still not happy see your GP, they will be happy to see her and hopefully put your mind at rest.
