ds is 14 months and has been teething quite badly for a couple of weeks. just before he started teething he got a nappy rash. every nappy change i apply lavender oil and then metanium but it is only taking the redness away and not completely clearing the rash. it keeps flaring up. also up until about 2/3 weeks ago i was using cloth and washable wipes but i needed a break from washing them so got a packet of wipes and disposable nappies. could this be prolonging it? should i go back to cloth? and what should i use to clear the rash now since metanium isn't working. it always did before.

Is he having a good amount of time everyday without any nappies at all?

If you can, do without in the garden or just toddling around indoors for as long as you can bear everyday, despite the mess which can be quickly clear up.

If he was in cloth up until a few weeks ago and the rash has been going on for a similar time it is possible there is a link. Possible that he has allergy to the chemicals in the nappies or something in the wipes. Could be worth trying back in cloth for a while at least to see if there is any improvement.

Also it is common for nappy rash to get infected with thrush so could be worth using some canesten cream.

thank you. he has about an hour or so nappy free during the day. he sleeps alot during the day so i put a nappy on him for that because i dont want to have to change the sheets all the time. i dont have enough sheets for that.

i'm going to start the cloth today then and hopefully it makes it better. will get some canesten too. is that the only thing you would put on it? should i stop with the lavender and metanium?

We used eco friendly 'Nature Baby Care' nappies. My daughter flared up with any other types (much less chemicals).

Also we tried every cream and I swear by BEPANTHEN, not cheap but a little goes a long way. Has Lanolin in it which is also in Lansinoh the wonder nipple cream.

oh also we only use Johnsons wipes with the aloe vera green strips on (they have a pink and green packet). we also found these were good.

My dd1 had horrible nappy rash (I was so relieved ehen she was potty trained)

I've not tried it but many Mnetters and RL friends have - egg white - whisk it up and apply to sore bits and rash will be gone.

There was a disclaimer on here about it - saying not to try if your baby hadn't had eggs yet, but if your ds is fine with eggs then it might be worth a try

Other than that - I would apply some cannestan just before nappy free time - it will then do its magic, apply the Metanium (thinly) just before you put his nappy back on.

I used Bepanthen as a daily nappy cream (VERY expensive) for my dd1 and Metanium for flareups.

One other thing - have you diluted the lavendar oil - if not it could actually be irritaing the rash as it is very strong if it is undiluted essential oil?

booyhoo · 22/07/2010 14:57

yes it is diluted in water. i put about 5/6 drops in a small pot of boiled water and dab it on with cotton wool, let it dry and then put on the metanium.

ds has only had eggs once about a week ago and no reaction. do you think it would be ok to try the egg white? when you whisk it and apply it, do you leave it on nappy free or put a nappy on over it?

sorry for not getting back to you. The answer is i don't know as I have never tried it - maybe do a MN search on nappy rash/egg white - I think there are lots of threads about it.

I think that diluting with water can cause irritation as the oil stays very potent and they recommend diulting with a carrier oil. I am no expert - just what I have been told.

I used to put one drop of lavender oil in the bath (large adut bath) for my dd1 and didn't apply it directly to her skin. A friend shook a lot more into herds's bath and he came out in a rash!

If i used wipes regularly on both mine their skin suffered. I use wet muslin cloths at home that are washed with the nappies and save wipes for when out. I agree that air is the best treatment as well as no more than 2 hours between changes during the day plus a cream that acts as a barrier for night times (I've always used sudocreme but there probably is a better option).
