I noticed today when sitting behind ds on a ride in the zoo, that he has a slight sideway curve in his spine. more to the top of the back. ever so slightly but definately curved.
wwyd? show him to the gp? osteopath? take another look in a few weeks time?

Definitely go to your GP, it doesn't matter if it's not that obvious, this is a 3-year old whose mother can see something is wrong, just demand a referral to an orthopaedic consultant. My 5-year old has a slight sideways curve to his spine and that's because he has Perthes disease in his hip which has resulted in a shorter leg and a pronounced limp. So whilst it's nothing to do directly with the spine, it's causing a curvature of the spine. Your child may have nothing or may have something significant. BUt it's never a waste of anyone's time to get it checked out. I'm not suggesting your child has Perthes by the way, just giving you an example of why a child might have an asymmetrical spine....don't ignore it...call the doctor tomorrow morning! Good luck, hope it turns out to be nothing serious.

Definitely a visit to the gp and a referral to an ortho consultant, curvature of the spine should always be taken seriously, and a full examination by a specialist be done. I am sure it will be managed and not cause a problem, but you need to have it looked at, and the causes for it assessed. Good Luck, try not to get too stressed.

thanks for your advice. will take ds to the gp as soon as I am back from the holiday from hell...

Hope you aren't stuck at some airport somewhere! Let us know what happens at the gp's. I am sure it will be fine, it will probably just need watching, and maybe some physio?

mousymouse · 29/07/2010 15:45

so, we now have a referral to the orthopaedic department at the local hospital. gp was actually very nice and took his time. he said it*s good to investigate early so that physio will still work to straighten the back out if it is only a posture problem...

Sorry to hear about your child. Sounds like scoliosis - my 13 year old has just been diagnosed with this and is having to have a brace. Really good that you spotted it, and all I can say is good luck, I know we are struggling a little with the whole concept but know it is good to be having it sorted out.

Bonsoir · 29/07/2010 19:29

GP, and insist on a referral. Scoliosis is very serious.

SparkleRainbow · 30/07/2010 09:13

I am glad you have got the referral, fingers crossed for you.

had the appointment today.
it is not scoliosis but the spine is curved at 15 degrees. normal range is up to 10 degrees.
follow up appointment in 6 months to see if it has changed. physio thereafter. bones and muscles are normal so the orthopaedic said not to worry.
